HY05 XGG: Need Help With History..

Hi,

I am looking at buying my first Clio, I have done quite a bit of research on them and know that I want a FF, RB, with good or full service history, ideally belt service already done. Main key points from a personal point of view is that the main paintwork is in good nick, the engine has no major problems and not mental mileage, pretty standard really when looking for a new car. Anyway Jon.G and myself went down to Birmingham last night to look at one.

On the whole the car is in quite good condition, the description is as follows:

Full Fat, Racing Blue, stripes, 70,000 on the clock, full Renault service history (bar the belt and dephaser that was done at NW Performance!) £3400

The overall feel of the car is good, it seems to run fine, and the paint is in pretty good condtion. There are a few points that bother me though, the belts, of course changed at NWP so they would probably need redoing, as the belts were changed, then 2000 miles later, the dephaser was changed?! Also the door has some marks on the end of it, not the face or the inside face, but the very edge of the panel, as if it has been hit into a wall, this has started to suffer from the very early stages of surface rust, so would need respraying (anybody any rough ideas on costs for this???) The sump cover also has a lot of oil on it, and the sump nut also has a lot of oil around it, so could this be a potential leak? Finally the car has had 5 owners in 5 years. This rings the most alarm bells for me as I am concerned it may be riddled with problems!! I know it has been on CS at some point in its life, and has always lived in the NW area. I was hoping someone could shed some light on it and maybe point me in the right direction as to any problems with it, or why it has changed hands so many times!?

Reg plate is HY05 XGG

I obviously havn't bought the car yet, nor have I placed a deposit on it, so I want a no BS assesment from anyone who can help. I have around £4700 to spend, so this is way under budget, so some small problems are fine, I just don't want to buy a money pit!

If anyone can help I will be so grateful...

Cheers.

I don't regard belts being done at NWP as a small problem; rather large, sounds like a money pit already.

Belts and door is already 800 ish.

There are PLENTY of 182's for sale and seen many RB's too.

Walk away and keep looking, IMO.

Plenty of 182's yeah, but I can't see many RB's though?!? Most are cups (don't want) or have zero service history, I'm happy to get the belts changed, and also the door resprayed, I was thinking £200 for the door? I am feeling a little uncomfortable about it, just want to know more about it!

Depends how desperate you are. Cars go up for sale everyday especially this time of year.

Yeah around that bottom end for the door.

If your feeling uncomfortable then walk-away, that is the golden rule !

What more about it will you find out to be honest ?

Walk away IMO. I would never buy a car if A) I wasnt COMPLETLY happy with it B) If didnt trust what the seller was telling me

I don't have any trust issues with him, he's fine, but I know, gut instinct and all that! Want one so badly but I think head must rule over heart on this one!!!

If your intuition and instincts are telling you that something is not quite right, then it is probably not quite right. Walk away from that one - another will turn up.

What's the deal with NW Performance?

Trader hate/suck ups on here.

I've had mine done there, as have many others, and they are fine.

By the way Edd..... I looked at 8 before getting mine!!

Give me a shout if you want a hand checking one

Did you have this done at NWP too?

the clutch was replaced last November , and it still under warranty also. I owned the car for 15 months, the marks on the door never really bothered me , they were like that when i bought it , an when the door is closed you cant notice it

Ah right eh mate, I remember speaking to you, I couldn't get the loan through in time! You enjoying the new car? Right okay, yeah I know people say NWP is okay but unfortunately I've heard more bad things than good, and I mean a lot more! Don't want to hate on them or **** a car off because they've had work done there, just personal preference really! Right okay, you any idea why the previous owner to you sold it???

he was getting an evo if i remember correctly, 3 previous owners of it are on here, which are the last 3 owners. Nwp did my old 182 and the was fine too, however i appreciate that some people have had bad experiences with them so if it bugs you may be best getting it replaced by someone else. I am totally loving the new car :) I missed the clio for a day then i got the megane and that was it. The splitter on the rb clio got split into two by a high kerb in a car park by the way, i did try to save it but it was worse for wear

Yeah not bothered about the splitter, most of them end up damaged, guess that's what they're designed for! Nice one for the info though, I will considor it. That one Revels just sent me is nice, I think thats on Pistonheads atm or possibly Autotrader?! Would I be right in saying thats a standard 182 in RB? No cup packs?! sorry for the noob question there, juest want to be sure!

its a racing blue with cup packs, Full fat, just missing the splitter, if your referring to my old one that is :)

Which one are you reffering to? The first car (one in Birmingham) is fine paint wise and is on cup suspension, the one revels posted is standard yeah, from what I can see too.

Gem's has no cup packs.

That leaves you a multitude more options for after market suspension.

No splitter - usually missing
No spoiler - easily obtainable
Silver wheels - look better anyway

Yeah yeah I know cup suspension limits aftermarket coilovers and the like, not arsed about the aero pack, like you say, dead easy to get that. You know anything about Gems, been looked after? Worth the look etc?

Revels; Silver wheels are better and I've advised this but lacks cup suspension and he's not sure if he'd go down the coilover route. Think he'd be happy with sportlines on the cup suspension, which is why I personally advised that not having the suspension pack is rubbish. Like you said though, splitter and spoiler are easily obtainable.

Silver wheels look pony on a RB

I'd also be getting the belts re done. Nothing to do with suck ups, ask budgie/sir dave, they make quite a good living off cars from the NW ;)

Yep, I've advised on this. I was a bit cautions as the service history shows the belts been done, then as said the dephaser done 1/2k after it on its own. My impression (from fred and other specialists) was that if the dephaser is changed the belts need changing at the same time, No matter when they were done.

PMSL. Not a living, just enough to put beers in my belly. ;)

Obviously NWP are not the most popular name on the forum, but I want to ask some-one who really knows, what exactly is wrong with them? Provided they use the right parts ect?!? they just monkeys or what?!?! :D

I went to see this Friday and took it home with me. I was very impressed with the paintwork on it tbh, was pretty much perfect apart from a few stone chips and the chips on the door, all looks the same colour to me! It definitely goes alright and had a huge amount of paperwork with it. I wasn't so impressed with the state if the inside so just used this to get a few quid off it. Given the seats a good going over with some raceglaze alacantra cleaner and a JML bobble remover and pressure washed the seat belts and its fine now apart from the melted steering wheel. Regarding the belts, it's had both belts and the desphaser done so i cant really see why they would need doing again. I don't think the timing is out as it seems to be running perfectly (touch wood). So far i'm loving the 182 I definitely should have got one years ago! Ben

Nice one mate, glad to hear you've bought it, takes the desicion away from me! It was the drivers side door that bothered me the most, and despite the belts and timing feeling alright, I would still consider getting the belts redone by a specialist, from the paperwork it appeared the belts were done and then just 2000 miles later the dephaser was done, so the belts came off to put the dephaser on. From the feedback and research I have done on here, the belts should be replaced if removed... Anyway, good for you for getting it, Ill be joining the RB club soon ;)

Yeah i've seen the marks on the door and thought they are pretty minor so will touch them in for now and get it sorted properly if and when i get round to it! I'm going to leave the belts for now, as I really don't see the problem re-using 2K old belts and I don't do many miles so they'll be replaced way before they are next due to be anyway.

A mate is machine polishing it at the weekend and I'm gonna have all the seats out and give it a good clean out. Have to order some Eagle F1's for the front to match the rear and get rid of the ditch finders on it at the moment!

Just enjoying driving it so much at the moment it really puts a smile on your face!

We have no evidence that they werent replaced though.

Found any more yet Ed?

Is it deffo RB that you want, not considering any other colours?

Zero proof that they were replaced, seems highly likely that nwp simply put the old ones back on, I occasionally get tempted by trophies, but its an RB that I want yeah, not even liquid yellow turns my head now!
