IK Help

  BMW F31
hi guys, went to a rolling road with a few friends on saturday.

last november i did my first one and i got 114.1bhp with just my ktec stealth cat back and a panel filter.

since then i've added a decat and a k&n IK, on the graph it shows that it is smoother through the revs with the IK and decat but i only gained about 0.5bhp lol!!

now i'm putting this down to me gaining a bit with decat and loosing it with the IK (which i knew, but forgot to take it off and put the std airbox back on)

now i want to try and stop it loosing power through the IK, its an open filter at the mo. i want to try and get some heat repelling jackets for the IK intake pipe, i've seen these on a couple of clios recently so it should help with keeping the intake pipe cooler, but i'm not sure what to do about the open filter?

try and enclose it? swap it for a viper/bmc?

here's a very old pic of what it looks like with the K&N on.

dont really want to get rid of the k&n as it has helped with flow of air through the engine but want to try and get over the heat soak issue.

thanks for reading the essay. ;)

ideas please guys :)

Youre lucky you gained that with a big open cone filter stuck there!! Its still a gain!

Enclosed filter FTW!

yeah i know lol, i meant to swap the std airbox back but totally forgot lol.

its a gain but f**k all gain lol.

want to try and improve now on keeping the inlet temps down.

i'm sure the decat has helped, but IK has brought the power back down.

the idea when i got the IK was to swap it out for a viper or BMC as normally its a bugger to get the right shape intake pipe etc so it was easier to buy the k&n second hand then add another filter to it.

just wondering if anyone has some ideas to combat the intake pipe heat problem.

cant seem to source the heat jackets i've seen :(

What was the original BPH before you put the stealth cat-back exhaust and pannel filter in?

its not going to be the pipe as much as the filter sucking it in from the rad and block if your not getting a enclosed filter you would have to make some kind of heat shield.

If the car was rolling roaded with the bonnet up, what difference does it make??

true but heat rises remember, and the block is where the heats coming from, true it would be even worse with the bonnet down which would possibly lead to a loss!

have no idea mate. im guessign circa 110bhp.

although a friend of mine had her 1.6 rolling roaded at the same time as me and it only made 106bhp with a panel filter and ktec cat back with the letter box style exhaust.

thats what i was thinking, i'm gonna try and get an enclosed filter from fleabay or somewhere.

only prob is i dont drive with my bonnet up so its cheating a bit lol.

Then you've answered your own question: The IK is losing you power and needs to be binned if its BHP you're after. Standard needs to be refitted.

Although, if you can cope without the extra 2hp and love the noise, then leave the IK on.

You could try and turn that into an enclosed IK. But then again in the long run it would probably look better and be cheaper to buy an inclosed IK lol.

Just get a cheap BMC CDA off ebay, buy the adapter to reduce to the size of your TB and wang that in!
