im sure it didn't do this before

I've become a bit obsessed recently with mpg and how many miles left etc. on the onboard computer since I've startted using Shell Optimax.
But yesterday and today Iv'e noticed that when I'm sitting parked at lights the numbers start dropping, surely, iff anything they should be going up cause I'm using less fuel. the miles left to next re-fill start dropping too.
I'm sure this never happened before.
I always re-set the trip computer when I get in. Has anyone else noticed this?
Maybe I'm leeking fuel.

when your stopped at lights or rolling up to a junction have it in gear and your clutch down doesnt use any petrol this way

Your using fuel but not going anywhere so your MPG will drop down. Even when your at 7.2 in first your still moving so your mpg is better.
infact when you stop mpg is miles (ie 0) drivided by fuel burn which cannot be done.

Not moving at all with the engine running is the worst kind of fuel consumption.

The engine is running == using fuel

Your not moving == doing no miles

Equals = No miles per gallon!!

I think the only time no fuel is being used is when you are using the engine to brake..

mmmh, I see, maybe I'm getting to obsessed with fuel consumption, feel like I'm filling up once a week. what milage are people getting per tank in 182

Nope, the engine can cut fueling if its slowing down but the inertia of the car is slowing down. If your slowing down best do it with your foot of the clucth and use engine braking once you put your foot on the clucth the engine needs fuel to keep it going.

if you roll up (leave it in gear and clutch out though) to traffic lights alot instead of driving up to them and braking your mpg will be a bit better.
also if your going downhill instead of putting yoru foot down and going faster, just ease off a bit and let the inertia come into it.. all helps

the lighter you are on the pedal and less rpm you go up, and the less stop/starts you do the better you will get.

if you're sat still your not going anywhere so your not doing any mpg, as you could sit there stationary and use a gallon but you wouldnt have gone anywhere.

  Arctic 182
Typical MPG on a 172/182 is 33 imo, some will get less when ragging (late twenties), some will get more (~37) if mainly motorway driving at 80ish.
Awaits flaming :)

yes thats what i thought, seen some people saying things like 45mpg,
aye right!!!
The penny has dropped on the mpg and mileage going down, thnks all.

2000 W reg 172 with Ktec system plus induction averages 44 and can run upto 52mpg. If ya want proof speak to Mike at Rentech hes seen it.....and it tallies with the tank.........and no i dont drive it with a feather, car is driven as it should be....

  182... again!
I've had 16mpg on a trackday...through to 40mpg driving very smoothly and steadily! Average 33mpg though!

im sure that i seen it on a top gear repeat the other night the one where he drove to scotland from london to back on one tank of fuel, i could be wrong tho

i only get 37mpg at 70, and more like 33 at 80 :S

why would your MPG decrease??

my mates 1.2 clio the MPG went down drastically, and he had new plugs fitted and it was back to being good?

  133/225/CLS AMG
I found my fuel consumption in my 172 between about 28-32mpg about town, would creep up tp 35-37 on a longer journey. Never used to hammer it constantly as i'm sure you could get the mpg way down in the 20s.

Makes sense that your mpg drops when standing still since you're not doing any miles per gallon as sat still and burning fuel.

  Clio 200
in my trophy the other day i noticed it went from 279 miles to 185 in about 2 minutes, i restarted the engine and it went normal

  182 Full Fat
Only gettin around 25mpg at the, but lots of short journeys and cold starts don't help. I have seen 35MPG on motorway. Remember when you first reset the trip meter, the mpg figure will vary a lot until it settles out after around 20miles.

  Volvo S60 T5
Mine runs 27 mpg at the mo, god I wish I hadn't modded it so much, everything checks out fine on the engine and stuff.

  Mk1 Clio
i drove from

NEWCASTLE > DONCASTER > TATTERSHAL (LINCONSHIRE) 230 miles

On £20-£25 in my valver on Friday.

Was very impressed.

Car full of gear to cause I was going on holiday!

If you reset the Trip Comp everytime you get in then it will go up and down more frequently. I only reset it when i fill up my tank. Mine does go down when stationary at lights, but what the heck? You've got one of these cars for a reason! Don't be paranoid about fuel, just drive it!

Tyson.
