Induction Kit = Running Lean

R

rich[182]

Am I right with this ?

Any after market induction kit (open or closed) will result in running lean but a replacement panel filter will be ok ?

If it runs lean what do you have to do to correct it (can it be corrected without modding the ECU)

The ECU may compensate by throwing in more fuel, but only to a point.

Personally I prefer the stock airboxes on cars as Ive never seen any improvements in using a cone filter.

Like you say, best to use an aftermarket panel filter in the stock airbox.

If cone filters are better, then why do race teams (F1 & Rally) use pressurised airboxes!!! ;)

Ye I would probably stick with replacement filter until I could afford a re-map at the same time..

Modern day ecus can cope with some flow rate and/or inlet temp changes, and adjusting the fueling accordingly, but alot of the time you do need to correct the fueling in some way, this can either be by a remap via a decent Superchips dealer or someone like Hill Power or BB, or you can fit an adjustable fuel pressure regulator which will allow you to up the fueling to cope with any lean points you may have (I know Nick Hill has done this successfully after fitting one of his induction kits to a car.... was it a 1.2 16v?? - I cant remember)

Well, Hill Power have tested the fuelling and its ok apparently...

They had a Cup in with a Viper and there was no problem with it running lean on the top end, then they fitted an R-Sport ECU and re-tested. This increased fuelling to give more grunt.

Just remember that these are Renault engines, so its never the same thing twice, so always make sure you get it checked..... cos running lean could kill ya engine in the long run.

Wise words mate...

I had an R5 GTT engine in my garage that had been running lean and it was a mess!
