Inlet been done

  Milltek'd 182
Right!! another new mod so another write up! lol

had my matched inlet fitted with my local mechanic today. firstly i'd like to say that craig (stan*) of 'advanced powertrain developments'(APD) offered me excellent service, and was always quick to reply to emails and give help. the workmanship was of a very high standard and he also sent me an RS inlet :approve: . and was also a little cheaper than competitors. so all in all i was more than happy with his service.

now for the fitted bit. the mechanic i used does all the work for the garage i work for on Saturdays (my step dad) and i originally wanted to take it to a specialist (Rentech, K-tec etc..) but was assured by my step dad and mechanic that he would be cheaper/closer and would take more care. so i ended up taking it to him.

left it there the day and text my step dad during the day asking how he was getting on reply - 'pulling his hair out and with very sore knuckles. Should be done soon though'

not really what i wanted to hear!!!:dapprove:

so i went to pick it up and it turns out he spent 5 hours, yes that’s right 5 hours!!! doing it. and has charged me around £130 cash (i supplied all gaskets). so this pissed me off a little as a specialist could have done it for cheaper. (following rentech quotes etc..)

then i got home and though id have a little look under the hood! craig had scored on each side of the inlet where they should match up to ensure maximum airflow and so there is no 'step', and it turns out the lines aren’t meeting (see pics below) anyone know if this is ok or if its far out of line and so affecting performance??

the engine feels more eager to rev and more punchy, so it has added power however i dont think it was the '6-13hp' that was expected (from what ive read on here, not necessarily what APD quoted) has been achieved although this could be due to the inlets being poorly matched on fitting. if anyone could give opinions on if the matching is ok or if i should take it somewhere to get it realigned??

cheers guys, and thanks for APD for a good service and delivery.

advice to anyone buying a matched inlet - if you aren't competent with mechanics and are no where near the place you are ordering (they usually charge about £40-£50 on top of the matching charge to fit) then be prepared for quite expensive mechanic bills.

just undo the 7 bolts and pull it forwards a tad.

Hi mate hows form, so you got it done. It is a nightmare to do if you aint done it b4. you can move the to plenium yourself noprob. only take ten mins with a 10mm spanner/socket & ratchet

5 hours! Took Angelworks 1 hr 30 to do mine, and no skin was lost or harmed during the tuning of my car.

I had my inlet exchanged at Angleworks. Originally I had an RS inlet but once machined they are all the same internally, so didn't mind not having an RS in exchange. Ben quotes a very reasonable price for doing the job but it isn't local for me so I dropped it off for exchange when I was passing with work.
I decided to do it myself as I have had many years experience in engineering as a mechanical fitter in a precision environment. Not having any experience on this engine showed up as it took me nearly 4-5 hours to take it apart. I didn't know the top o/s engine mount needed removing and the engine to be jacked up. This did include breaks and a few phone calls to Ben.
I sent the plenum of for polishing on my return but did fit the lower inlet manifold.....very tricky indeed. The componants have to be aligned near perfect to get the maximum from the matching process. Again with some guidance from Ben I got there, a lot quicker than removal I should add. When looking through the injector ports you can check alignment and then by looking down through the manifold.
Anybody having their inlets matched I would seriously recommend them having it done by the guys who match the inlets if you are in any doubt.
Picking my plenum up tomorrow, so hopefully will be running for the weekend.
Many thanks to Ben at Angelworks.

yea i recommend having them fit it too. i cant tell if the match is good from engine to inlet :S but i'm going to adjust the phlenum tomorrow. wish i'd gone to rentech now...or lived further up north!!! lol

5hrs? £130? you've been had son its piss to change the inlet

if i didnt know the guy i would have told them where to go...but tbh i'm a bit stuck for options! i'm just going to have to swallow the cost and maybe get rentech to have a little look when i get my aux belt done. :dapprove:

what does it cost all in generally to have this done and what benefits will i see on a 172 mk2 ph1,

and did u manage to sort it yourself then davejm123 hows the gains seem now

£150 ish depending on who you go to!!should be good gains on a ph1 172, better than the 182.
i havent seen the full gain as i havent alligned them well yet. lol

Glad youve got it fitted! as above, just slacken the 10mm's enough to allow movement of the plenum, and adjust so the lines match, then tighten...job done!

Looks like the mk1 172 benefit the most from this, something to do with larger ports on the head couple with crapper manifold casts in the first place.

Couldn't be happier with mine though, and cost a darn site less :p

the phs2 172 has larger Exhaust ports, not inlet, but the inlet manifold casting is one of the roughest so benefits mostly from it. THe larger ex ports simply allow you to run a lower pumping losses and run a cleaner burn next time around.....i.e they arent a restriction like the late 172/cup/182 ones are.

abit of work is needed to get the inlet and bottom end, two parts. injectors etc.. out.

made a nice differnce to mine :)
