Insuring a second car, quotes over 1k!!

  Impreza Wagon
I'm currently looking into insurance for a second car. It's going to be a weekend/track car more than likely a 106 Xsi/Rallye/GTI so will cover very limited miles on the road.

The insurance prices on a 1.6 16V or 8V are really high, I'm looking at over 1k for a car that'll do about 2k miles a year! A 1.4 8V then comes out at £210 a year which seems odd?

I currently use my NCB on the Clio which is 5/6 years but can this be used or help to lower my premium on a second car?

I can't justify paying more than what I currently do on the Clio for a second car so hopefully I can do something to lower it!

I couldn't get any benefit from my exisiting NCD when insuring a second car, so bit the bullet, and paid the price and built up a second NCD.

I wish you could tansfer it...I'm soon to lose my second car, and all the NCD that goes with it!

I just don't understand how the price can go up so much from being a Xsi 1.4 to an Xsi 1.6, it's stupid!

I've seen a car I really want so it's just thrown a spanner in the works now as the insurance is more than the car.

Admiral from me, insuring 2 cars on a multicast policy was nearly a grand cheaper than doing both seperately. No amount of no claims will mirror that saving every year IMO
I've already got the Clio insured with Admiral. Did you change to a multi car policy from a single?

So then do you have 2x NCD? You just build that side up separately?

Well kind of, started a policy with the M3 and wanted to add the Audi in two months time when the that current policy ran out. They will then end at the same time and I'll get the no claims for it.

Try them for it, by far the most polite and useful customer service people I've spoken to!

I just had a quick play about online with multi car and managed to get it down to £1100 for the Clio and a 1.6 Xsi so it's a lot better! I'm going to give them a call and see if I can add a car mid policy and see what the charge is.

Nick, I tried doing this for MY M6 and my Clio, but because the Clio was modified they wouldn't touch it, plus didn't work out as much of a saving for me.

I have my 172 with Adrian Flux, all mods declared and covered for £600 a year.

Speak to Brentacre they mirrored my NCB and are only 1100 on my 11 plate corsa diesel (30k per year) and the clio with any mods included up to 190bhp :)

Having no joy at the mo with anything over 1.4 litre. I've got a S2 1.6 Rallye lined up for viewing next week but I really don't want to be paying over £500 a year for it. I must have some other options? I'm even toying with selling the Clio and buying a dirty diesel run around, arrrghhh I hate insurance!!!

Bear in mind Admiral etc will be a nightmare for a track car (modifications) If you do go with admiral make sure you explicitly ask to take out a "modifications cover policy" alongside your normal "motor insurance policy" otherwise your mods will be declared but not covered. Infact forget admiral completely for a track car as the most they'll pay out for mods is 10% of the value of the car or £500, whichever is higher. 10% of a 106 wouldn't even cover your coilovers.

Have you tried specialist track car insurance? Some companies, though I've never had any luck myself, offer a "legal cover for on-track drivings + 5000 miles of TPFT to get you to the track and back" type policies. Can't remember many names off the top of my head though! Read the small print though, these policies aren't made for popping to the shops.

REI (Richard Egger insurance)
Competition Car Insurance (no good if it ain't competition registered though IIRC)
Herts Insurance Company (AKA HIC)
Moris.co.uk

TBH I don't see what's wrong with the 182 for track time etc. The money you'd save on 2nd tax, insurance and the initial outlay would more than make up for increase in servicing.

If you want a dedicated track car then get a trailer and forget about insurance/tax etc.

My 182 is a daily driver so id be screwed if it broke on the track. I've had a 106 in the past so really want to get another as they're easy to work on.

I could possibly be collecting one next week so insurance will need to be sorted one way or another! If I do struggle to keep it running it should be easy to shift if needs be.
