Insuring two cars

I possibly need to insure two cars for a short period of time but have been told that I cant use my NCB on my second policy :S because its linked to the policy I already have ..

Is this correct ? do I have to start again with the second car policy ?

  VW ....
^never knew you could do that :S

but yes Marie ,if you have to take out a seperate policy u can't use your NCB from your existing policy ,as far as i'm aware anyways .

I didnt know you could have two cars on one policy either .. who did you do that with Adam ?

With Tesco, i was able to add another car onto my existing policy for as long as i wanted minimum i could have was 24 hrs. Only cost me £8.

Admirial advertise the 2 car policys a fair bit. Each company I tried that did this, and ones that say that they will mirror your NCB on a second car all worked out more expensive.

Worked out cheaper for me to get two seperate policys.

yeah i used to add my 205 onto my policy for the clio too,

but yes you can only have your NCB used on one car

  R35 GTR
Ok so why cant you use your ncb, this makes me mad thinking about it? Lets say you have two policys and crash on one you would lose both sets of discount.

Of what i know you cant use your no claims bonus on both policies , only one .... you therefore build your on claims seperately

Ok, this is how it works. If you take out a 2nd policy, you can't use your no claims bonus on the second vehicle, you can only use it on one policy at a time. If you get a 2nd policy with the same company you are already with, they can sometimes give you the equivalent no claims bonus discount as your original policy, this is not actual no claims bonus, just the equivalent discount, its called intro bonus. They will only consider giving you intro bonus if you've had no claims or convictions in the last 5 yrs. You can only put 2 cars on one policy if the company offers a multicar policy, and hardly any companies do this, it usually works out more expensive too.

the next question would be who then ??????

I cant remember all the ones I phoned now, was over 4/5 years ago and I ended up going down the 2 policies route as it was cheaper anyway.

First port of call is phoning your existing insurer and then asking others. Only name I remember saying they will mirror ncb and do 2 car policys was Admirial but a few others said they could aswell. My existiting insurer at the time which was Flux said they would take into consideration I already had one car insured and discount the second car.

Some of the companies in the back of EVO mag talk about discounts for those who have only ever bulit up NCB in company cars, so these may also be usefull if you are planning on starting a frsh on a vehicle with no NCB to use, but some on another vehicle as the situation is alike.

Maz, i know a trick that works, but its up to you if you want to risk it.

I am assuming that you have a good amount of NCD on your current policy.

Firstly is your policy up for renewal soon on your 182?

If so, then you can do this.

Set up two new policies with different insurance companies for the two different cars you need to insure and inform them both that you have 5 years NCD (if thats what you have)

In turn they will both ask for proof of NCD from your previous insurer, this can either be your renewal notice, or a letter confirming your entitlment.

Ask your old insurance company to send you your NCD proof, which you can then send to your first insurer recorded delivery to ensure they receive it.

Call your previous company again and tell them that you never received the proof they were meant to send you and ask them to send you another copy.

When this arrives, send it to your other insurance company recorded and your sorted, both will have received proof of ncd

No questions will be asked, as the start and end dates of all the policies add up. If you ever get caught (which realistically it is impossible to be found out) you can just play dumb and explain you never knew that your NCD could not be used on two vehicles

Ta Da, all done :)

( i am not saying that fraud is the right thing to do, but playing dumb certainly is )

If its for a short period of time, then yes your company will be able to add a TAV (temporary additional vehicle ) to the policy. I added a fiat Bravo 1.6 onto my VX policy for 7 days and was charged about £12 - thats with admiral

I work for UKI (tesco DL RBS Etc) and we will do it for up to 90 days. Its sometimes free if the vehicle is a lower insurance group than your actual vehicle

  williams and trophy
im with norwich union direct.

the mrs has a policy with them, with me as named driver, and i have 2 policies out with them, 1 for each of the williams'.

now....they wouldnt give me my 9+ years ncb i already have on both policies, but seeing as tho i have the other policy , and the mrs' they said theyd give me the 70% cash discount on my 2nd policy, meaning that even without the no claims bonus, the 2nd policy was still the same cost (well less actually) as the 1st policy.

0ncb ...but insure the willy fully comp for £460 odd.....which is about the same as the policy with 9 years ncb.

bit daft really cos they only really accept 5 years ncb.....but yet they wont let u take the extra 4 years i have and put it on the other policy.

all i will say is to avoid admiral multi-car policy. i beg of you lol

but if i was in your shoes i would go with two companies and play dumb as imo its stupid to follow the rules and let the insurance companies screw you over.

I'm on 2 cars at present but only until mine is collected later today then the full policy transfers to my new car :D As soon as I drive the new one, my current cars cover expires.

i have the 172 and rx7 insured through bell.
They took my 10 years+ ncb on the clio and used it on the rx.
So now the cup costs me £500 a year inc all mods and the rx7 is £300 with a 3k miles a year limit.
