Invalidated Warranty

I have just scome off the phone with my local Renault dealership, i was booking my car in for its service.

Im now the third owner of the car, it was previously owned by Reanult UK and then by the second owner who i then bought it off.

Anyway, the garage are now saying my warranty may not be valid, this is because the car, i was told, was serviced at 6k by Renault UK, so therefore it would not need to be done again for another 12k. I bought the car from the second owner at 16k and he informed me that it would need servicing at 18k.

Getting to the point, the garage said it would be unusual for the car to be serviced at 6k, they think it may have just been checked over not an actual service, he says if this is the case my warranty will be invalid.

Do i have any rights if this is the case???

6K was a small free check-up that Renualt did for a while, it still needed its full service at 12k, some dealers are still confused and think it is a 18k mile service interval for a 172, which it isnt. If it is stamped as a full service you should be fine.

Unsure of your rights but wouldnt hold out much hope for you if it wasnt serviced as you have gone a long way over 12k. Sorry, hope it works out OK :(

You must be really worried, I know I would be. Is your car around the 51reg, my first clio had a safety check at 6k, 12k later it was due for its first service but this was a 1.2 16v so would of been correct, they did stamp the book for the safety check cause i asked them to. It doesnt change the service interval so cant imagine that it would have been, doubt the oil will have been changed at 6k either. Speak to renault customer services it about it. The problem is if youve been misinformed by the guy who you bought it off, you will have to try and track down were he got his info from. Hope you get it sorted.

I have invalidated your warranty becuase I refuse to pay Renault Kent extreme prices. Clocked 16,000 miles this morning, will be having my 18,000 mile service at AA service station as per usual. I wouldnt trust Renault with my Cup.

But if Renault made the mistake, they should at least honour the warranty?! If they made the mistake of only fitting three wheels to your car then they wouldnt say hard luck, go away...or maybe they would, this is Renault afterall ;)

172gal, kick up as much fuss as you can, find out whos in charge at Ren UK and hassle them daily till they sort it just to shut you up....this really does work, Ive tried it! :)

but renault have not told you anything only the previous owner has so renaults responce would be f**k off !! why is it their fault if the owner didnt get it serviced as it said in the book ???

Im with you dogmaul - Renault told the previous owner wrong, so they might have had a case but not 172gal. I think youll have to accept it.

However, you can now mod to your hearts content :)

I thought the service is every 12 months OR 12,000 miles

so if the first owner only did 6,000 miles in the 1st 12 months then it would have been serviced b4 the end of the 12 months @ 6,000 and wouldnt need servicing till 12 months or 12,000 miles later @ 18,000 miles.

so I dont see how youve invalidated your warranty unless it was over the 12 months

i booked my 12000 miles service in. When i took it to reno id done 13100 miles, they reckon ive lost a certain percentage of my warranty, the BASTIDS, wouldnt mind but it was them couldnt fit me in for 3/4 weeks and i ran over by then!!

hope u get sorted, reno warranty is pretty useless to be honest....

Depends if the 6000m service was done at 12 months or not. If it was done early, then Im not sure where you stand. If it was done late, then youre knackered. If it was done on time, then it depends how long ago it was done.

172gal - can you give us details of what was done and when? Plus when the car was registered? Should give us enough info to work it all out then - were kinda guessing at the moment

Its every 12,000miles or two years.

I think GR has had her car serviced way before 12,000miles and before two years??

Nope, VivJ is right, it is every 12k or 2yrs.

Si 172, arent you leaving yours very late at 16k, I know you have no warranty but surley for service history you wouldnt want to leave it much longer.

Theres no problem with having it serviced early had mine done @10900 cause the car broke down and I have booked it in for the Fri, was geeting the car back on the Wed and wasnt prepared to to take it agian on the Fri, they said as long as I have it service within the 13k max there is no problems with warranty and I have had many issues sort since. I certainly would want to be paying for the Brand new Cat and centre sections (X2) cause I had invalidated my warranty. The cost of this work alone would be close if not more than £1000, and thats in the last 4weeks, never mind all the stuff with the cams.

surely the only comeback anybody would have is if the book was stamped, like dogmaul says you cant blame Renault for something the previous owner told you !!!

service book for the cup says 12k or 2 years

It depends on whether the 6k service was a full service or the free checkup that Renault did, in which cae it hasnt been serviced.

OK the service book is stamped. There are two letters corresponding to the service A and B.

A is ticked, then theres the mileage 5600, the date 05 July 02. Then its stamped with Renault to go.

The car was first registered in march 02.

Im really getting worried now. If its void im f*cked :(

I reckon that you are gonna be ok then, according to what renault told me there is no harm in having the car serviced. I really would worry, this will not invalidate the warranty, the warranty will on be invalidated if you exceed 18600.

Speak to reno customer services tomorrow. Try not too worry.

I might be wrong but I was sure its every 12 months for the 172
Its every 12,000 miles or 2 years. Was told by Ren UK, the handbook and the dealer. I had mine serviced in May and the little sticker says next service 24000 miles or May 2005.

Well thanks for all the help people! I guess im going to wait and find out next thursday when it goes into the garage. Ill report back and let you know how it goes.

Keep fingers/toes/anything crossed!

yeah sorry, you were right just checked my service book. I think it used to be every 12 months but they changed it recently. Not complaining though it means mine wont need a service till the end of next year cause Im only doing about 6,000 miles a year in it.

Nobody seemed to batter an eyelid when i took my DCi in for its first service at 23k. Only 5k past its service interval, LOL!

Its ok matey, I had one at 12,000 miles, just not a Renault one and will have another at 24,000. Renault say every 12,000 miles for the 172 I do believe. Although its had oil changes at 6,000 mile intervals in between.

Hannah,

I would speak to a dealer principal about this matter prior to the servicing and if he didnt put things right, I would take my business elsewhere and get someone at a Renault cealership to stamp the 12,000 mile service as done.

In other words get the stamp with dates and mileage to look proper, service the car at an independant, or the more friendly Renault dealer for your own peace of mind and carry on with an intact warranty, keeping to the proper schedule in the future.

What do you think they would do if you traded the car in to them tomorrow! The same thing, and offer the car as fully warranteed!
