Is it legal to have a shadow on my number plate?

anythin other than standard lettering and size is illegal, but you would be hard pushed to be done for just that!

they are standard size and lettering, just have a standard size and lettering shadow lol. christ there were a lot of quick replies

I used to have that style of plate from fancy plates on my GT Turbo, never pulled or an issue with MOTs in 4 years so its fine.

What would happen if you did get "done"?
Would it just be a fine or would PC Plod go over the top Vehicle unfit for purpose etc etc.

TBH when they are printed they don't really look that noticable, especially with the honeycomb reflective on.

Its a simple enough swap anyway.

I have a silver shadow on mine. I got pulled for parkin on a zebra crossing. At the end of it he said you have a distintive plate, but he ment cut down. So i was lucky. I still have the same plates 3 years later. it passes its MOT

how about a 3/4 frount plate. That would still only be a £30 or £60 fine.

I have 3/4 on the front and normal size on the back, my style of plate is 'raised' carbon domed letters, Renault Sport ghosted in the background and the slogan "Frog Rocket" underneath. Passed a few police cars, 1 was stopped at a junction right infront of me and didn't do anything! :approve:

My mate has an Evo 4 and he has a tiny plate on the front smaller than mine i recon, and he's never been pulled and passed every MOT!

To me personally, I think its alot to do with how you act/drive. The police are more likely to pull you if your hooning around with a loud exhaust and music blaring, than if you simply have a shadow on your plate IMO.

i've had cut down plates on my car now for over 2 years and have had nothin said. its discression of the officer who notices at the end of the day

I wasn't taking the p*ss. What I meant was that so many people (especially on here) do things which others advise against (in this case number plates) they then get pulled & post up how un fair the law are for pulling them

fair point, jst thought you were 'expressing a negative opinion in a highly critical way' about my choice of plates. I have similar plates just without the shadow and its been problem free, however when I had non-standard fonts I got pulled over 3 times in 1 week!

Yes, 3D characters are permitted providing they meet all the other requirements.

Lol, shadows aren't legal ! Only standard font & standard font with 3d lettering is. Yoy are a lowed the courtry bit too (on the left hand side) if you want, thats it.

Check the dvla website, you'll see what i'm no about.
