Is it possible that an induction system decreases power instead of increasing it?

I have a Clio Sport 172 2003 and they tried it on the rollers with the induction system and without it and figures indicate that it´s better with the standard filter.
Is this possible?

Renault don't just chuck something that looks ok on when they design the car, most IK manufacturers do.

Induction kits improve the flow of air over the standard set up.

The key thing is setting it up correctly, making sure the fueling is right if required, protecting against heat soak, the addition of a decent cold air feed.

Many people lump one on and expect to be running a extra 50 brake.

one important thing to do is once you've fitted the ind. kit to disconnect the battery to reset the ECU. This changes the fule setting mixture slightly to the new amounts of air being gulped by the engine as the computer is a self-learning unit and calibrates itself accordingly.

It like the grp-n remaps, if you have this done, then have say an exhaust fitted, reset it and it will adjust accordingly. Clever shizzle and something i did everytime i fettled with my K&N, which will be going shortly though...

Thinking about it does anyone have a preference for an ITG panel or say a viper/hillpower closed IK?? Having my remap done in 2 weeks and need to get the best filter to work with it...

Dose that actually work? disconnecting the battery?

Its pretty hard to gain 10 bhp with just an induction kit. So it should be just as hard to lose that much. There's a real chance that the induction kit had little or no effect, other than increasing noise levels, and something else caused most or all of the 10 bhp lower reading on the dyno run when it was fitted.

If the filter is choking your engine you'll definitely lose power . I had a k+n apollo which did this . I now have a k+n cone filter in a custom made enclosure , the filter itself has a larger surface area than the original panel filter . Definitely pulls as hard if not harder than the oem filter .

The only way you'll get a drop from fitting a induction kit is heat soak.

If its on a proper rolling road you wont get that due to the fan cooling the engine.

Lots of info missing from the guy who put this topic up

I was well impressed with the Viper i had

I had mine RR'd last week. I had fitted a smaller ITG maxogen to it to try and free up some space. It ran 181bhp with the filter on and 187bhp with it off. Thats a back to back run with the same program in the ECU. So a filter will make a difference epecially if it is restricting the air flow into the engine.

Not really conclusive that mate as youve reduced the amount of air that can be sucked in by using a smaller IK. Fairly obvious that would choke it up a fair amount :)

It proves a poorly specced filter will reduce bhp. The pic shows the filter, it still has a 70 mm inlet but a smaller surface area.

I'm happy with my Maxogen, and it looks p**n, but given my time again it would be panel filter and modified CAF to standard airbox. I believe my Maxogen is better than a panel filter.... but not enough to justify the cost. However I did pay £300 for a new Maxogen and had more money than God at the time.

Now I'm a mortgage paying homeowner it would be ghetto modified OEM airbox. lol.
