is it possible...

  Clio 1.2 TCE 08
just wanting to know wether its possible to change the rear drums to disc and calliper like the front, i have 08 1.2 tce .. and just wanted to know if this conversion can be done and what parts i would need.
thanks..

ahh right i wasn't to sure, I've never had a car with drums before and they are hidious LOL... would that mean i would be changing the pads at the rear more regularly?

Not really, the rears don't do much anyway, so upgrading them is pretty pointless.

If you want to stop better, then spend your money at the front end.

If it's all about looks, not much can be done really.

ooo i see, i thought having disc at the rear would help with the breaking! so would i need to upgrade the size or something of the front disc and callipers?

Doubt you can upgrade the size that easily, without getting bigger alloys that is.

Just get better pads and discs.

I had full race spec pads in my old 182, the braking power was unbelievable, but you won't need anything like that on the road.

Does it not stop very well then?

no tbh I'm not 100% confident on the braking on the car, had a service about 3 weeks ago and front have 55% left and rear 80% the front ALWAYS squeak! I've had them cleaned, re-grooved etc! waste of money last 2 weeks... when i brake hard just to see/check feels like it jumps :/ !! could you recommend a link? of disc and pads to get? thanks for posting back :)

Well Brembo HC discs and Ferodo DS2500s are the most commonly recommended combo, not too cheap though, but NEVER skimp on brake parts.

and fyi......it's 'brake' ;)

  Clio 1.2 TCE 08
sorted ;) lol the mac sometimes corrects spelling  haha! so ill have a look for brembo HC disc and ferodo pads... yeh i don't mind spending bit more money on something as important as that especially if ill have more confidence in the car ! how much did yours come to all together? and is there a big big difference?

When you brake, all the weight shifts to the front wheels. Because of this, it doesn't take a lot to lock the back wheels. So you don't really need strong brakes. You'll be fine with drums.

Well I got the pads second hand of the Burpspeed race car. They cost near £200 for just a front set though, add around £50 for the discs too.

You really don't need that type of pad, I wanted pads that wouldn't fade on track.

stock is perfectly adequate mate, new set of pads might be a good idea but thats about it

yeh i know renault would of designed it to the car but... if you was in the car and i showed you a hard stop and you can feel the car jump! not a nice feeling especially if it was an emergency.. what if i just get some top quality pads and see form there if its not enough then change the disc...????

I swapped the rear brakes on my 1.2 Mk1Ph3 ages ago from drums to discs; it was really simple as I swapped the whole rear axle over on one shot, 4 bolts, 2 brake hoses and it was done! It didnt help with the braking at all but it did look a lot better imo!

yeh sounds like it would cost a bit for mine to get the whole axle etc... its more for the actual braking which i think is s**t! in general, can someone recommend me some high top quality pads to get please!

Standard with good fluid if thats not good enough check standard work ie calipers and servo etc.

As edde said, you need to make sure what youve got is working correctly before looking at spunking your hard earned on shiny new pads, discs etc..... Is the 'jumping' feeling only happening when you slam on??? If the ABS is cutting in, the pedal will feel like its jumping against your foot, how are the tyres, and how are the road conditions where you are??? If youre driving around treating youre brakes like a switch (all on or all off) then youre gonna lock up fairly regularly, or cause the ABS to kick in.....

Most modern cars are far too over assisted.

What do you mean by 'jump' ?!

What tyres are on your car. They are the key to braking, as they provide the traction on the road surface...

fair point steve its had a recent service like i said 4 weeks ago or so they didn't mention anything, the jump feeling is more of it stops but doesn't stop... i use the gears to slow down etc and don't break to hard day to day... but say i stop it will stop then say skip still even tho my foots on the break all the way down.... :/ need one of you guys who know what your on about to drive the car lol

  Ph1 track 172
i assume before you look at buying expensive discs and pads for "more stopping power" youve already swapped for the 280mm 172 brakes?

  Clio 1.2 TCE 08
will the 172 clio brakes fit my car? what do i need the disc and pads of the 172 or? sorry i have no clue or experience in this.

You can fit them but by the sounds of it you neeed to sort out whats up with your stock brakes first

yeh like I've said I've had them cleaned, re-grooved the lot, and all the garage say is some pads just squeak :/ I've had 7 cars non have squeaked unless pads or something is on way out, and the pads are on 50% left.. are the 172 bigger??

Go tyo another garage explain the issue they maybe able to explain it or check.

Some cars brakes do squeek if there hard race pads or not instralled right or just a bit funny often copper greese etc fixes it.

If it slows down to a point then keeps on going, it could be locking up. Either s**t tyres or bad driving......

  Clio 1.2 TCE 08
must be my driving, even tho i don't drive around with a heavy foot all day long, and I've had 4 Michelins expensive tyres did the same thing, and now with my low profiles... any way to avoid locking up? apart form breaking properly and gradually
