is it worth.. (polly carbonate)

  C63 AMG, F430 & 172
fitting

polly carbonate windows to the

*rear screen
*rear side windows
*Front two windows (which are formed so they can wind up and down)

or will it look s**t and i have a feeling that the front two are goin to scratch when being wound up and down?

i mean do i really need it? how much wieght can it save? the above has cost me £400 but its taking ages to tuen up and i have the option to cancel them.... do i need it?

i'm fairly sure it will save more than that, it's one of the weight saving measures I want to take; but i will have the front ones fixed or like you said they will scratch.

They will look worse than glass, but they are for performance not looks

what is the lead time on getting them? from performanceplastics i assume?

i think they will save you quite a bit of weight. be nice to find out how much the standard glass weighs.
as said above, the finish of them is not as clear/clean as glass

I wouldn't be arsed with it tbh. Too many downsides. (scratching, costs etc)

not unless he goes for the ones which don't go up & down (the ones which just have the little opening in them)

He'd be able to remove all of the window mechanism then, saving him even more weight.

Saves weight, but did you ever think how much structural rigidity the glass adds to the car? If you do get them, scrap the winders and get hatches.

Real question is, how much difference will even 10kgs add to the car on track... i was going to junk my electrics for winders, but for the difference in your laptimes, really not worth it.

Mhmm, but if he said that about three or four things, rapidly that's perhaps 50 kg+ and becomes a useful weight saving.

I was under the impression that:

a. Ben has plenty of money to throw at this project.
b. He is in the process of building what is going to be a no nonsense track car.

On the above assumptions, my answer to Ben is a wholehearted "yes" of course it's worth it.

I was always under the impression it was a good way of saving weight higher up in the car in the same way a carbon roof was usefull?

What about getting those windows in the front that have like a shutter in, then you can get rid of the winding mechanism all together.

it will save a lot of weight and is worth the money
however i wouldn't wind em down as they will scratch...
but
you could always get them tinted so they wont scratch
