Is the phase1 a future classic?

Nope, it's capable a good drive but nothing more. It's not good looking, nor is it ugly in a cool way like a GT Turbo. Added to that it was made in such high numbers that it'll take a long long time for them to be rare enough to be considered classic or have any value to it.

not read the thread but i suppose that will help with what i say.

i'm a renault enthusiast, i always enjopy seeing an RS on the road, since driving a 172 i notice more and more, i doubt a ford fan will share the same enthusiasm, yet theres no denying be them rarer than alot of other fast hatchs they arent RARE as such. owners can get a little too protective and rose tint things...

they are more of a classic than the phase two arent they with them being older, raw, etc but the williams boys can come on here and say the same about the ph1.

but one mans classic id another mans shed, totally down to personal perception

nope. maby the 172cup ,odd mint LY182 but more so the 182trophy will become the icon from the mk2 range!

  clio 172 phase 1
The ph1 will be a future classic, its got the "hardcore" looks or you could even say "ugly" and will be the Renault 5 GT turbo of today but only original examples with low miles.
When was the last time you saw a 80`s Hot hatch" on the road? I have never in my time of owning my ph1 seen another ph1 172 loads of ph2`s and even the cups but not the ph1 172.

completely agree!!

i think it will be. but not yet. one thing it is tho for sure is the best bang for buck on the used performance car market fo' shizzle. Leather seats, 2.0 170bhp, chunky styling, old school throttle cable and clunky gearbox for not a lot of ££££. Williams is a classic, but not these yet. Awaits the tirade of conflicting opinions and subsequent smartarse cliosport abuse! This is just my opinion. classics to me are 205s, 5gts, escort turbos, etc cos they're what I always wanted when I was learning to drive!

+1!
Although saying that, the same didn't work for the Peugeot 309 GTi (my last car!) - it's the ugly sister of the 205 and only real Pug fans are into them it seems...

If it becomes a classic it'll be a while before it does, for now it's just an amazing bargain ^_^

As for quantity, there are SO MANY 205s and Golfs, and they are regarded as modern classics, so no reason why that would stop the Clio from going the same way :D I saw another ph1 172 on the road the other day and got really excited, ha, unfortunately we were driving up a dual carriageway in torrential rain so neither of us fancied a play really :S

309 gti - I'd definately have a good 3 door one of those. I got sucked into the 205s tho like the rest of them! Beast.

^^^^ loved the goodwood version. and i much prefered the 309 to the 205s tbh.

Mine (with me in it, on the Nurburgring) :D I do miss it, but the Clio is such fun, much faster and smoother! Haven't had a chance to test the handling yet mind...

Edit: Sorry, completely off topic

I love mine to bits, but you need to look at it from a real perspective my lovelies

For a car to be a real classic it needs to have appeal. Just because the car itself is awesome to drive and puts a smile on your face doesn't mean it has classic appeal..or 'iconic' appeal ..

Looks: It's a Clio

Any mechanical engineering feet that made it ahead of it's time?: It's a clio

it's a clio

^^^^ true.

shot down! good larfffff tho and cheaper to buy one of these than it is to replace the tyres on a real car like a lambo!

i still think the trophy will defo be an iconic hatchback. but also even more so the mk2 V6's!

I'm biased and hope that the 172 cup becomes more sought after. Being one of, if not the last car to be manufactured without ABS. OK, its hardly a drivers car in a real world. Maybe the blue will do it. Even though the silver ones are less common, I would say a blue cup would be preffered.

I am saying all this in the hope that the values pick up. If they go much less, I would probably keep it as an ornament when I get a new car.

Be the same as the 205 IMO

To average joe a shed, to people like me it will be a old awesome hot hatchback my rents had when i was young.

  Ph1
Would you call a S1 RS turbo a classic?

Its not really excellent at anything but prices for these are sky high and climbing even tho their not rare and production was well over a ph1 172 iirc?

Maybe the defenition of what makes a car classic is more about demand ?

  Astra SRI/ Hornet
Nope the ph1 won't be. the trophy has the limited numbers and rep to become 1 an maybe the 172cup. All of peoples arguments like chavs owning them has all happened to rs turbos and 205's but there still classics now. Look at the escort cosworth 90% of owners are chavs. Lol

  172 Ph1, Lupo GTI
Its good, i'll give it that but being a modern car it does not give that same buzz the older generation did. Its a fault of most modern cars so eventually the goalposts of what a classic is will somewhat have to be redefined. It treads no new ground but refines it. True classic = no, modern classic undoubtedly.

the V6 or Trophy are the only 2 with a chance.

the V6 has the best chance mainly because most people buy them just to say they had or have one.

Hmmm i'm not sure to be honest, I think the Trophy will be and the cup might be but the PH1, I doubt it.

The inferno could be a classic case of what colour not to paint a car.

Knows it! Although I did used to own a yellow car!

To be a 'classic' you need to be the type of person that contines to keep a s**t,rotten, uneconomically viable car on the road due to love or which then rises in price because its one of few opposed to one of many.

Sierra cosworth 3 doors seem to be a good buy when I looked a little while ago. They used to be nearly 10k opposed to 3-4k for a sapphire. Now a sapphire demands around 5 and a 3 door about 7. There are many many Ford fans who seem to be pay silly money for that badge.

I used to work with a guy who did banger racing. He would be cheap mk1,mk2 escorts and go through several a season. He is kicking himself now as a poverty spec one makes fairly decent money now.

  V6 255 (Illiad Blue)
The V6 is already accepted by some Classic Car Insurance companies if that helps. They consider it a "Future Classic" in their database

think of the type of character and history of all those cars. now think of the clio extreme which has neither.

Doesn't matter, if you saw an extreme in 30 years time you would still deem it a classic. Albeit not a very nice/great one. Take the mk2 Ford Cortina for example. looked s**t, went s**t and had no character. Same with something like the Austin Allegro yet they're still classed as classics now. The "history" of them is something that comes with time!

I'm with this thought too... Although, the 205 GTI was mass produced and look how thats turned out.

But Williams 1, Trophy and V6 have the best chance - for now...

think character...furthest car from mind is the old agro. altho did have an equipe back in the day, was pretty cool in an odd way.

also think ford prefect...character....anglia...none.

both classics due to their age.

mk1 granada, again no character compared to the likes of the mk1 capri. both still classics.

mk1 mini, classic....bmw mini....never going to be.

much like the ph1 172 imho
