Is the V6 MKII for me

Hi guys,

Newbie here, so be gentle. ;)

Ive been into performance cars now for several years, and been through a TT Supra, 2 x Evo VIs and a P1 as well as my current M3. The priority for me has always been driving pleasure and performance, as well as originality (M3 excepted!). Practicality and image have never been of any concern, much to the bewilderment of most of my friends.

Anyway, I bought my current car (M3 Evo Conv) in a moment of madness, after telling myself that I should buy something smoother and more sophisticated. After 6 months of owning it Im bored to death and longing for the sheer grin factor that I was used to previously. My immediate thought was to go back to the tried and tested Rally Reps, but Im starting to think that theyre so common these days and starting to lose their specialness and appeal.

After reading the positive reviews in all the car press, I am really warming to the idea of a V6 MKII. What I want to know, is if all the hype is true? Is the MKII really all that? Will I find the V6 slow after my previous cars, or does the sheer driving pleasure make up for the lack of oomph? After 5 years of 300+ bhp cars, Im scared that I might find the V6 lacking in clout - what do u guys think? Also, handling and grip wise, how tricky is the MKII on the edge? Can I still have fun on the corners without coming close to death, or is that not possible?

I have yet to test drive a V6, so Id be interested in peoples comments and experiences.

Cheers guys,

Mart.

Hard to say really, the Mk2 V6 is pretty good unless youre a total hooligan, in which case itll kick your ass. You do get plenty of warning before this happens however!

Your previous cars have mostly been saloons, so you may find the lack of space a bit of an issue!

I doubt youll find it lacking performance, its so involving youll have plenty to keep you occupied.

Book yourself a test drive and see :D I did and I bought one!

I was out in a mates P1 today, holy mother of christ it was one fast car , I felt like the skin on my face was being sucked off under acceleration.

Caveman, if you get a gorgeous V6 Clio, you will have to get used to getting loads of attention from other people as that is one stunning looking car, and pretty rare compared to Scoobies, Evos and the M3.

Even if you think it isnt as quick as your other cars, it more than makes up for it in the looks department! ;)

Go on, you know you want to!!

Clio Renaultsport V6 255 – Test Drive magazine
14/02/2005

If you havent had the pleasure of checking out the phenomenal Clio Renaultsport V6 255 theres only one thing to say - why not!?!

In the February edition of Test Drive magazine, journalists James Mills and Nathan Morgan dont just sing the praises of Renaultsports most outstanding creation, they truly see the Clio Renaultsport V6 255 as one of the few saviours for motorists who fear the future of driving is a bleak one.

While driver aids and speed cameras are obviously welcomed on the grounds of safety, they have conspired to take much of the enjoyment out of everyday driving. But in the world of affordable sports cars the Clio Renaultsport V6 255, according to Test Drive, really is king and provides maximum entertainment and fun across all levels.

Mills and Morgan say how "Its a car that sneaks past accountants and side-steps customer clinics. But somehow, somebody at Renault decided to make it happen - and for that we should all be grateful."

"While the performance of the car is superb, perhaps the most striking thing about the Clio Renaultsport V6 255 is just that you cant fail to notice it. Alongside cars which cost at least three times more, the Clio Renaultsport V6 255 turns almost every head on the roadside."

"...its difficult to see how Renaults petrolheads managed to sneak a mid-engined V6 supermini past the powers that be. Few cars this side of a Ferrari or Lamborghini generate as much attention from onlookers as this...on the attention per-pound scale, its right off the register."

The 255hp, V6 engine certainly provides plenty of power and the Clio is faster than any of the hot-hatches on the market, regardless of its weight. But concentration is paramount at all times, as Test Drive wisely points out - you MUST give this car plenty of respect.

"Cars like this are few and far between. They show someone in a car company actually has a whiff of petrol running through their veins...buy the right car at the right price and youre in for the ride of your life. The Clio Renaultsport V6 255 is less Va Va Voom and more Va Va BOOM."

Hi there, im a newbie to the club too. I have recently joined but havent got my pack yet. Im selling my MK1 V6 at the moment if your interested (me being cheeky) they are absolutely fab. Definately agree with previous comments - if you do find it slower than your previous cars then the attention you get will far out way that (Good attention that is). Ive had people photograph mine whilst im driving. Anyway they are a bloody quick little things so I dont think you would find the power a problem!

Test drove an Evo VII twice and after driving the V6 for 5mins it was no contest on the sheer enjoyment factor.

It might not be as quick as your previous cars but it is so much fun. You can go very quick round corners once you have mastered it (demonstrated so well by Jeremy at Spa), no jerky movements is the key.

Hello Caveman,

Ive owned a Skyline, a couple of Porsches and now on the Clio V6 - its powerful enough to get you in to trouble!. Everything you read about them as a drivers car is true. Id only bought mine because I thought it actually reminded of a GT3 which Ive been fortunate enough to drive on a couple of occassions.

What I do find lacking (in terms of power) is when you really want to get on in motorway driving...it can feel a little breathless sometimes...but it you take one on a circuit and use the revs, its fantastic... can embarass much more powerful cars and provide thrills in abundance (and the odd "educational" experience thrown in as well!). Trying to manage the majority of weight in the rear certainly focuses the mind!.......Brakes are brilliant too...

Im not just saying that because I have to sell mine ;) hehehe

contact me through my profile if youre interested!...only selling because I have to leave the country!

Well caveman it looks as though you have me and maybeV6 seilling you our cars. PM me if your interested in looking at mine. ;)

All the attention the car attracts has been mentioned................well................I have found that ALL of that attention is complimentary and not chaves out to do a number on the car.............they seem to appreciate it more than other cars.................which is why I dont have to be as careful as I thought I would where I park it.....................which is unusual

PS YOU CANT HAVE MINE CAUSE iM NOT SELLING :D

i came from a 300bhp Fiat Coupe 20VT.

the V6 is quick yes, but not quiet in the same league IMO. i dint find it that great at top end, not really suited to high speed runs, youll find it a little slower at top end (acceleration), but on A-roads and tracks etc, its quick enough, and the whole driving experience is awesome, sounds like nothing else on road, be prepared for EVERYONE stopping at your car and looking or taking pics on their phones, you really will love owning one.

so involving to drive, no electronics to control you, its all in your hands, this makes it a extremely fun car to drive.

i can get the arse end out whenever i want now, and i end up laughing to myself in the car, so much excitement.

I really need to meet up with you, so you can show me how much of a pussy Im being!! Ive only got the ass-end out (properly) on about 5 seperate occasions in 4 months! Even managed it in a Merc 180 Coupe today so is it me or is it very tricky in the V6??

Back on-topic:

The ownership of the V6 is what its all about. As our friends on here constantly remind us, there are much faster cars (for the same money, or less), there are much better handling cars, etc etc. BUT there is nothing quite as eccentric and awe-inspiring as a clio V6. As Stu mentioned, it gets masses of attention, mostly from non-car people who say I bet that shifts (not with a mk1 gearbox it doesnt...haha ). Ive had mine for a few months now, and just when I think Ive got used to seeing it, Ill sit down in the house and catch a glimpse of it and stop and stare. Its that sort of car.

Thanks for the comments guys. Im definately going for a MKII, and prob a new one too I think. So you think the lesser performance will be made up for by the sheer ownership pleasure right? Lets hope so.

Wheres the easiest showroom to test one, Im in the Surrey/Berks area?

Anyone have any picks of a V6 in that Megane orangey colour - looks quite smart?

Cheers,

Mart.

Not if you go via the web site suggested by telford_mike Mart...............and I think it was £300 which they only refund if you buy the car...........easy money or what eh

Erm...

a subaru impreza, a fkin fast impreza too.

anyway stop taking this off topic! ;)

personally id advise buying a slightly used mk2, not a new one. there are lots of them available now with little mileage to be had for bargains.

mike - most arse end outs are unexpected, except the one i do EVERY morning joining the A127, sometimes scares the sh*t out of me though.

stu - you live at the top, mike in the middle, and me down here at the bottom, so where do we meet? top middle or bottom? (strike it lucky)

:D :D...............top middle or bottom................:D :D

Oh Ive just had an idea I might be coming down to Rochdale in 6weeks or so to have the car mapped............so thatll be about the middle then eh :D
