sounds like a small compressor in the background, diesels dont sound that good?

Looks like one of the bastardisations they get abroad, all the Ph2/3s I know of have a FBW throttle whether its the VVT engine or not. Only the Ph1 had a cable one.
Also there no real way to tell whether its a 1.4 or 1.6 as they are both asthetically the same.

Looks like the K&N kit, you get a similar sound when you take the standard inlet plenum off.

interesting theres so many weird reno variants about
Looks like its got a Ph1 interior too, its wierd alright. Could be a Clio Symbol, as they have a Ph2 body and a Ph1 interior, looks like they just put a Ph2 front end on a Ph1 and cobbled a saloon back end on.

The post Nov 02 1.6 is the VVT engine. Thats why the MPG, Max Speed and Insurance group changes from 40>39, 121>120 and 10>8 respectively. The haynes also states later models are equipped with VVT on the inlet cam.
Its not supposed to give a kick or anything its there to provide a smoother torque curve, theres no 16v kick that you usually get either which i'm assuming is coutesy of the VVT.

  ST on the way...
Diesel engine wouldn't dip as quick as that after a rev surely!

It's gotta be a 1.6 cos it stutters just as he presses the pedal lol

Looked it up in Haynes too and yep, only thing I get is a slight change in engine note at 3500rpm.

  1.6 16v without an engine
mines 51 reg 1.6 16v... its got a stutter when i press the pedal... tbh i think its a 1.6... ive took my cover off and it looks similar

Mine stutters when I press the pedal too, my old 1.2 did the same probably something to do with the fbw throttle.
I get two distinct engine note changes at around 3.5k and 5k, and boy does it sound good too. :D

so are the non VVT engines actually faster? so i want an engine before november 02 when i do my conversion? lol
Wouldn't have thought there was much/anything in it tbh, the VVT engine just gives a smoother torque curve so might be a little faster.
Its like with the 1.2 16v it picks up after 3k and the engine note changes when it comes on cam, with the 1.6 VVT theres none of that it seems to pull right from idle and you can drive it much more lazyily because of the extra torque lower down. Its just there to counter the downside to a 16v engine.
