is this bolloc*s?

  Nissan 370Z
just been to a renault dealer ship and they said if you put 17inch wheels on a 1.2 16v lets say then this is illegal, as if you take it for a service they wont touch it and it can damage the prop and drive shaft?

cheers

  Nissan 370Z
ok, cause my dad just given me a lecture about it saying 2dealerships said that, i thought it was b****cks as otherwise they wunt let you even fit 17s.
also..would anyone be able to actually get proof so i can show my dad as he keeps saying to me, buy from a dealership they know more and you get a warranty. i agree with him totally about the warranty but think they is talking shitt about the rest.
cheers

You only get warrenty from a dealership really but you can buy extended warrenties from some companies.

tbh they cover hardly anything..... so not really worthwhile purchasing. Even the standard 3yr Renault warrenty only covers limited items. In most cases modifications invalidate that part of the warrenty.

Just make sure you get the car checked over before you buy it.

as your not buying it from a dealership, you'd have to pay about 300 quid for one. Even if you could its so modified its not worth it. i'd stick to 15s or 16s. Its got a quite a high mileage on it so as soon as you get it i'd have the cambelt changed which will cost you about 400 all in. I was gonna have it changed at 54k, which is about now. Thats why in all honesty i'd be going for a standard newer car so i know i've got a few years of trouble free driving

one of my dads mates who works at a renault garage will come with me, so is this ok then?
shall i keep 17's or change for something smaller?

thanks guys, i need to prove this to my mum and dad or i cant buy a car.
thanks alot/

you cant get one, as your not buying it from a dealership. Even if you could its so modified its not worth it. i'd stick to 15s or 16s. The list can be endless on modified cars

As mentioned you have cambelt, possibly driveshaft/wheel bearings as the car is lowered.

^ i edited it your too quick ;). wheel bearings are prob about due to go as well in all honest due to the lowness, havent i had them done since i lowered the car over a year a go

why change the cambelt? they last a while i thought.
thanks

5yrs or 72k

But i would recommend they get changed earlier.

Mine was done at 64k with also the water pump as thats a common leaking point. Also aux belt.

  Chocolate Bar™
the cars got a highish mileage so has has says i'd prob get it done. They say 72k, but def should be done earlier really.

  RARE Unmolested Corsa sxi
5k before the recommended or at least 6months before the 5 years is up, is a safe bet.

  Astra coupe
As has been said. cam belt should be done at least 10k before they rekon, i'd much rather get it changed early than risk waiting untill 72k then it snapping and bending valves ect..

  Chocolate Bar™
ok gus cheers, but how can i prove it isnt illegal to fit 17's on?
cheers

why the hell would it be illegal? its not the best for your car yes, but so is not getting it serviced on time etc etc. not illegal just not recommended

  Audi TT 3.2 V6
lol would you believe Renault if they told you that the car MUST be serviced by them or else it is illegal? Just Renault monkeys talking crap again.

  Audi TT 3.2 V6
172s have 16s as standard and the tyres are either 195/45/16 or 205/45/16's cant remember which though tbh as i only have a diddy 1.2 lol

  1.6 focus zetec....
To prove to your mom and dad its not illegal.... take them to the local nick and ask them!! Or failing that go to the local MC D's and show them all the people on 17s +

its b****cks i own the lowest mk2 clio there is, and it has 17inch wheels, yes the driveshafts have worn a groove into the chassis legs, but thats hardcore!

  BMW M3
Illegal as in against the law? Have you ever heard of someone being pulled over because there wheels are too big... :)

If you just mean it would invalidate a warranty then thats something you just have to look at Renault with or whatever garage is supplying it.

17's are small. If your talking about putting 18 or 19's on then yes you could encounter incresed risk of problems occuring. Get 17's but make sure you also lower it or it will look like a big off roader. Mines had 17's on for 2 years now and ive never had problem.

15's will look too small, and 16's are a dead size in that no wheel company does alloys in 16 inch anymore

  Black 1.4 Billabong, 17s
True - i dont know about the drive shafts but it can put extra strain on the gear box, known this to happen in some of the smaller engine sizes.

  320d
The standard sized wheels for your car are 15's so having 17's on the car increases the overall rolling radius of the wheels which puts ever so slightly more strain on the car everytime you pull away or accellerate just like trying to ride a bike from a stand still in a high gear. The margins are tiny though.

As for illegal they're having a laugh the new 2.0 litre clios come with 17's as standard along with loads of cars these days.

  SLK32///AMG & 330ci sport
the acctual rolling diameter of a 205/40/17 is only 5mm more than a 175/60/15 (less than 1%) so i can't see there being a problem at all with extra strain on your your gearbox, that isn't even enough to put your speedo out!
