Is this pipe in the wrong place?

Right, recently my 182 has been playing up a little bit, doing all kinds of weird things, but above all it has been cutting out randomly when trying to start it, i.e. it will start, then cut out immediately. Yesterday it just about started, then after about 30 seconds of driving I started losing revs, it managed to get going again in 2nd, but was very odd!

Anyway the carbon canister is tapping heavily, so I have a new one on order, but the pipe, listed as number 4 on the picture below is attached to the carbon box at the point I have arrowed.

Would this make any difference to the running of the car at all?

When we had a look at the box the other day we removed the pipes to see how it would run, when we removed pipe number 5 on that picture, it was sucking air. I then bunged it up, as I had heard on here that you can run the car without them? Almost as soon as I bunged it up the engine cut out and wouldn't start again until it was unplugged, once it was it was rough for a few seconds, then the idle settled and it was fine.

Anyone any ideas what this was all about? And if pipe 4 needs to be in the location in the picture or does it not make a difference?

Thanks...

That pipe goes up to the inlet manifold and sucks in exhaust vapours

You should be able to block it off no problems

If you block it off and the engine cuts out - it sounds like the main inlet is blocked or the throttle body is gunked up
It should be able to suck in enough air to tick over without needing the carbon canister feed!

As you look at that picture, I blocked off the top pipe, the one that bends off to the top right of the picture, I blocked that off and the engine cut. Is that the one you block? Because it was making a loud sucking noise as it drew air in?

Ah right, well when we blocked that the engine cut out?!

I've got a new carbon canister on order now, so hopefully just replace that and no pipes will need blocking!

It still shouldn't be requiring the air from that pipe to keep the engine ticking over

I think you've got a bigger problem than a clicking carbon canister.

I'm going to pretty much clean the hell out of everything this weekend, I'm changing the oil and filter this weekend along with the sparks, give the throttle body a clean/polish, TDC sensor will get cleaned out, carbon canister replaced.

If it happens again after that, I will report back.

Should it happen again, what are your thoughts?

As above, mines been removed and the pipe ghetto blocked and it runs dandy. It's just for the fuel vapors in the tank under expansion.

Yeah I understand you can block it up.

My question now is, why is it that when I block mine up, the engine cuts out???

Logically it has to be the flow of the air, i'd bung it off - take off the airbox so it's just TB and see if it starts up - means you can see if the TB is actually allowing any air through (Obviously be cautious not to drop anything into "the void")

How could bunging it up stop the flow of air though?! I thought that pipe drew air from the tank, through the carbon canister and out again?!

Admittedly it is a strange issue, some people only report a light on the dash when disconnecting the system as opposed to the car stalling.

What does your's idle at on a related note ?
