is this really a 600 quid job??

Took my car (172) in to have the alternator sorted out today (the bracket holding the alternator or something had snapped and caused the belt to come off etc)

Spoke to someone at the garage today and they said the cost will be £600. From what i remember he said it needs a new alternator, new water pump, where the bolts had come out they had damaged something else to do with the heaters in the car(?) and price includes labor aswell.

Now i have no idea how much this work should cost, but seems a bit steep to me. Going to speak to the main guy tomorrow, (as this was a message being passed on to me by someone on the front desk, as he had left by the time i got the answer machine message and called back) and get a proper breakdown of costs before i give them the go ahead to do the work.

All im asking really is does the price seem steep, or is it just me and this is normal? They did my cambelt last year and i paid less for that than what this is going to cost..........

Oh, and it is a renault specialist before anyone gives the generic "take it to a specialist" comment

double check before jumping into anything though. thats just my thoughts

although its s**t and very unfortunate, if something snapped and made a belt fall off id expect it to cost a bit

buying NEW GENUNIE parts it'll be that much, that upper bracket is £100 alone, aux kit £72, alt £200ish, waterpump £60 at a guess, coolant £10, labour 3 hours tops

When my alternator bracket gave up a new alternator, water pump and belts would have been the far side of £600

(but the AA picked up most of it)

I think what Fred's trying to say is buy a second hand bracket for peanuts, buy a second hand alternator for peanuts, buy a new water pump and aux kit and then get someone who knows what he's doing to fit it.

Money ain't really the issue so to speak, just wanted to check price was right for the job. He said he will only be using Renault parts. also I've been told by a mate that the cambelt should be done if changing the water pump? is this right as they never mentioned it

no the water pump runs off the aux belt

Make sure that the Aux Belt hasn't taken out the Cambelt at the same time though.
