judder

  Clio mk1 rally :P
hey... ok ive had the car for a while now. and ther previous owners hardly ever used it. so i think it was a shock to its system when i started driving it.

but for a while now it has been juddering alot. mostly when pulling off.. or putting in to 2nd. as soon as i oput my foot down a little bit it starts to judder... then its ok..
but its really annoying.. im sure it looks like the car is ocking form out side lol

any ideas?? i think it might be not enough air?

Judder as in a bit of a thud followed by the gearstick shaking?

Get under the car and check the dogbone mount, common fault.

You'll have a hard time deciding if the dog bone is worn just by inspection. The dogBone is sometimes described as lower gearbox stabiliser. It connects the engine/gearbox to the subframe at the back. It has rubber bushes in it which wear. If they are bad then your gearstick will move backwards (iirc) when you accellerate, and flick forward when you lift off any you will feel the car jolt as the engine moves too much. on a 1.2, I think there is only 2 futher mounts. Upper and lower (upper can be seen) lower under Gbox. If they are worn they will contribute toward the problem.

AHA! Point8 i have exactly what you described!

I only really notice this in 5th. With clutch down it slots into 5th fine but the moment i accelerate it moves backwards and looks like it will move into neutral (but doesnt). Ive also tried to physically hold it in place before accelerating but its not loose, theres a deffinate force moving it backwards.

Thanks i was begining to get concerned about it, at least i know what a possible cause is! :)

Edit: Any idea of cost from a local garage? id imagine this requires lifting the engine which i cant do

Spot on Point8^^

Use a prybar at the back to see if it offers little resistance when you try moving it, or if it moves pretty freely - Doesn't require lifting the engine mate its a 2 minute job, one nut and bolt to the rear and one bolt going into the gearbox at the front.

You'll need a 16mm spanner and a socket on a ratchet, and an 18mm socket on a ratchet.
