Just been to Halfords

  RS mk2 172
Gave the car a good wash this afternoon and decided that I would give it the works so had a look through the posts in this section for some info on products as I am a bit of a newbie to this detailing lark and went down to Halfords.

Ended up buying the Autoglym detailing clay kit, high definition cleanser and the high definition wax but by the time I had spent looking through all the products it was 5 oclock and figured it would have to wait until another day as the light would fade before I was finished.

I realise now that I could have probably got the same stuff online for less but took advantage of the 3 for 2 deal and it came to £70 in the end.

Am I right in thinking that the HD cleanser is a polish and should be used after claying and before waxing?

Yes cleanser should be used after Claying and before Waxing, i think i am right in thinking that the AG HD Cleanser is like Lime Prime Lite i.e. no abrasives

for a couple of £'s, I'd suggest getting a bottle of autoglym intensive tar remover. wash, de tar, clay, rinse off, dry, HD cleanser, HD wax.

I really like the HD wax, but make sure the applicators are nice and wet. also only do 2 panels at a time leaving the wax long enough to cure but not too long that it's difficult to buff off. keep turning the cloth when buffing as the dirtier it gets the harder it is to buff it off. Gives a lovely shine though

Why do you say that? Its not the best I'll admit but if used correctly its good enough, especially if you want off the shelf products.
I suppose in that respect its ok in that you can buy it anywhere. But I didn't find it to be effective at all. Especially when compared to my newest product- Iron-X :)

I wouldn't!
Intensive waste of time! :p

for the majority of people, ITR is more than adequate. I still use it as well as Tardis depending on the on the level of contamination. and compared to other products on the shelf, it more than warrants its price tag

LOL wtf Iron-X is a totally different product!!

I think the key words to note here are "Intensive TAR remover" and "IRON-X"

Totally different products!

Although iron-x also removes tar spots? Its for all types of contaminants, not just iron.

I took advantage of the 3 for 2 aswell got some Zymol polish, show shine & bumper care :)

Waiting to try out my dodo juice banana armour when the suns properly out. Hi-def wax is awesome the only problem is it's hard work! Tough to take off but well worth it when you see the finished result :)

Iron x is for iron, it wasn't developed to remove anything else.

It doesn't have the right chemical make up to remove much else. Tardis will remove tar and other bits and bobs.

Most Tar removers are crap as the maker struggles with laws, that's why megs tar remover in america is like water, due to different chemical laws.

Agreed i found the intensive tar remover very good, car had tar spots from rub strip down on both sides, and rear bumper, half hour on each side with a soft cloth, rinse off and not one tar spot in sight.

Prob best thing i have bought from Autoglym tbh

ITR is fine. And if you're happy with fine, that's fine.

The simple fact is Tardis is doubly as good. It is also technically cheaper, but you have to buy 5L of it.

I've still got about 4l left of tardis and no matter how tight you screw the cap on it still smells! Hately stuff!! (But bloody good!)

I recently used Tardis and enjoyed watching it all run down the panels. I thought I'd bought duff clay when I used it after as it wasn't picking anything up until I did a panel I hadn't used Tardis on, it was that good. Although I am tempted to try AG ITR in a spray bottle now and see how well it works instead of wiping it on / off.

In what way do you find it hard to work? I've been using it a long time now and only ever have trouble if I leave it on a panel too long or the buffing cloth is due a clean. I keep the appliactor nice and wet, apply to 2 panels then buff off immediately. changing to a clean MF cloth really makes a difference to buffing it off.

What are the best products to buy if your starting out? Ive already got some Meguiars shampoo and some other basics.

I want to take advantage of this deal, so I was looking at getting the Meguiars NXT quick detailer, Autoglym Tire Dressing and a Glass cleaner.

Is that a good place to start or could anyone recommend any other products to purchase?

Those products are fine if your buying off the shelf in halfords...

Of course there are other products on detailing sites like i4detailing and clean your car etc.
