Just crashed

Yep...just crashed the motor on the Motorway...it was a bit mental.

Coming back from my old mans as it was his Birthday, on the soaking and misty Glasgow underpass leading upto the Kingston Bridge. All was well, no problems it seemed...everyone was doing roughly 50 (signs said 40).

Suddenly, the car in front of me slams on its breaks....I slam on mine and stop with about...

<------> this much to spare...seriously.

Thinking to myself...thank feck for that. Unfortunately the car behind me didnt stand a chance in hell. Saw him in the mirror and prayed for a miracle. The impact wasnt much, but enough to jerk the car forward and make me hit the car in front slightly.

Unfortunately again, this wasnt the end. Behind the car that hit me were three other cars, all piled up and in a terrible state. I got out, checked everyone was ok and made sure all was well first of all. At this point I hadnt even looked my Clio yet.

To my surprise (and relief) she wasnt that bad at all. The front actually didnt have a mark on it. Will get a better look in the daylight tomorrow. All seems well. The back has a few small scratches and a bit of paint has fell off but it could have been a lot lot worse.

I am so relieved, the impact seemed huge at the time but the damage is minimal. The bodywork under the rear bumper is still intact and no exhaust damage or anything that I can spot yet.

The guy in front of me said nothing was wrong with his car and that it was ok. We both checked the front of mine and it all looked well. He left fairly soon after it. I stayed with the group of people that formed on the side. Swapped name and telephone number with the guy that went into me. I doubt he will claim anything as it was him that went into me and he asked "do you want to swap details, or just leave it". Fair enough.

I never really took into account before about the breaking distance on the slippery road but now I have a whole new perspective. My first year in the car too, nearly the end...so this will be alright....hoping for that no-claims bonus anyway. Main thing was though nobody was seriously hurt...cars can be repaired - lost lives cant.

One relieved man here.

glad you are ok, the weather on the m25 and m40 was quite bad tonight, very foggy and wet.

Glad to hear no-one was hurt and your cars not too badly bust.

Nice post mate. A reminder to everyone that with the impending 4 months of sh*tty weather ahead of us, we need to concentrate on our driving (braking distances, visibility etc) and be more mindful of the conditions.

Just went out there for a little spin (to get gas) and now the motorway is a 30 limit.

Conditions like these are terrible! :( Really foggy/misty now too...not a good night for it at all.

Wil try and get some pics up tomorrow...not a lot to see though, thankfully

did u get the guys details that was in front of u?

it seems it may have been his fault? seems strange that he drove off quite quickly.

glad everyones ok tho.

Afraid not. He stayed for a little while but then just left. Was in a bit of shock...and checking all was well. First bump in the car, hopefully the last too.

Ouch Ive had 2 crashes and it shakes you up pretty bad!

One thing to check for though, I had a landrover go into the back of a AX I used to have, although the back was clearly buggered, what wasnt so obvious was that the chasis was bent as well so that was a total right off. So just make sure nothings been seriously bent underneath and all doors still close without rubbing etc.

Will have a proper chance to do that tomorrow when its light mate. Day off anyway so a bit of investigating is needed.

Cheers for all the help guys, appreciated.
