just got A MAC

  Renault Clio 1.2
just picked up my new macbook. Its extremely good etc, as you would expect from apple. However, i'm having issues with the internet, so far as i cannot connect to it. My dad has a home computer which has a 'Netgear' router. I have previously used a internet network card. But theres no need with a mac. However, i cant connect to the router.

Its keeps asking for ISP and PPOPE or something, and i dont understand. My router is a DSL modem, if thats helps.

Any help would be great. cheers ollie

13" screen? is it too small?

point to point protocol over ethernet?

is it a wireless router?

not too sure what you're fiddling with...if it works for your dad, surely you just wap your cat5 cable into it and hey presto?

Your Netgear router should have all the settings that you require, it's PPPoE that it's asking for I think which is under the basic settings of your router.

I can't really make out if you're trying to connect wired or wirelessly? If you're using a network cable (CAT5) then you really shouldn't need any settings at all - plug one end to the Mac and the other to your router and away you go.

Wirelessly, (assuming the Netgear is wireless based?) you're going to need a few more details. Hopefully, if someone has been sensible enough to activate some form of wireless security on the Netgear - that you've got the password somewhere? ;)

Assuming you're having trouble with the Mac recognising your existing ISP through the router.....

The Netgear router should come with a CD with instructions on it - older versions may only be readable on PCs. Other than that, type (in the Macs Internet Browser, IE, Firefox etc) the IP address of the router - as found on the actual router casing. Should be a series of numbers with a password next to it. On entering the IP address a drop window should then appear - type in the router password (normally something rubbish like PASSWORD). This should generate the routers menus. Select Auto configure and it will automatically find all your ISP addresses etc. You'll still need to enter your original usernames and passwords.

Welcome to the club. :D

I'm very pleased with mine... I've stuck my 2GB of ram in today. Seems fine.

I can't get it to work on my really old belkin router. It's worked everywhere else though. Range is great.

I have an iMac, i love it.

Anyway about your problems connecting to your router, does your router come with a Mac setup guide? My BT Homehub has setup instructions and it worked. Before that I tried without reading the manual and I failed lol!
