I take it you either installed kubuntu or have adhoc'd the install of KDE to ubunut ?

normally to get from runlevel 3 to runlevel 5 I would issue the command

Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start

I believe for KDE (havent used KDE for a long time) that the command is

Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/kdm start
