knock sensor

i have a problem with my knock sensor, my emissions light came on and after a diagnostic (i had an rs tuner) it showed a knock sensor fault, i did a search on here and found a thread about it, now according to the thread u can remove the sensor to sort the problem, or can u just simply unplug the thing. is this true, as i would have thought it would bring the light on if u did. cheers
