ktec exhaust problem...

  Audi S3 225

Hi, ive had my ktec exhaust for a few months now, but since ive added the coilovers and lowered it, the exhaust seems to be knocking on the back axles. And its getting very annoying, ive had a look and tried to fix the problem but the exhaust is so close its touching and when I go other the slightest of bumps it bangs like hell, and its even worse when I have people in the back. I have the back of my car lowered 60 mm and the dampening is on a very hard setting to prevent the arches rubbing.

How can I fix this apart from highering my car.

Thx for ur help

Allan

Allan, I was just about to post exactly the same problem.

I have a 1993 valver with a Magnex CAT back system, after I had it lowered 35 mm (according to the AVO springs but people say it looks alot lower!) the exhaust has knocked. Its ok when the exhaust is cold but after 10 mins its starts rattling, especially on tick over and when pulling away.

Stiffer exhaust mounts wont work cos Ive tried it, I bought rally X Plus mounts but it still rattles. This weekend I took it to a Magnex dealer in Padiham, Lancs, he got it up on the ramps and basically told me there is nothing he can do! The exhaust is knocking on the front beam because it has been lowered?? I cant believe there is nothing that can be done to cure this very annoying problem..if I find out what cures Ill let you know..heres hoping! Cheers Paul

Cheers for the replies, my car is the shape before the facelift model, 2000 Y reg mk2 I think. Anyway its getting to the point that I might just higher it a bit and soften the dampening, then at least the ride will not be as harsh and there will be less banging.

I know what part is hitting the back axle its the part of the pipe just behind the backbox which goes up and over the axle then down. The part at the top hits the back axle and you can see the marks on the pipe.

Paul mine starts banging as soon as I start the engine now, and when I stop and move away etc it’s even worse. Its quite embarrassing, I’m sure people outside the car can hear it!!

There must be a way to prevent this; any more help would be appreciated.

Thx

Allan

We have found that pretty much all of the aftermarket exhaust systems bank after the car has been lowered. You will find that when a company makes a system for a new model they base it of a standard car (unlowered), so do not consider what could hit when the car is dropped. The best way foward for a lowered car thats having an exhaust is to have a custom made system. People like powerflow can do it and give you a choise of tail trim. You could contact one of their dealers to see if they could make a new overaxle pipe for the system you alredy have.

Thx N.D.Hill but the pipe that hits the axle is the pipe thats connected to the backbox, so wouldnt this mean i would need a new backbox? Or could they wield a new pipe to the backbox?

All our systems are developed on lowered cars as most of the exhausts will eventually end up on a lowered car. It sounds like something may have moved or come slightly loose (such as the clamp). All the systems have good over axle clearance so it should not be too difficult to adjust it so it doesnt knock. If you want any more details please call me .

Had the same problem when I had -40mm AVOs and the CAT back Magnex on the MK2 172. Was fine when cold but when hot the exhaust expanded and started knocking on the rear beam under acceleration. There wasnt really an easy solution. So raised the car by fitting Eibach Pros. Handles better now even with higher ride height and exhaust doesnt knock/rattle any more! Low ride height looks cool but doesnt always cut it if you want the car to handle and be knock free!

BTW, I had a look at my mates Cup fitted with a twin 3" K-Tec a few weeks ago. His was knocking on startup. Turned out the rear exhaust hanger was knocking against the rear mount. Repositioned the mount (three torx screws)and all was well after that. The K-Tec looked a top quality system BTW ..... just a bit loud for my tastes!

twin 3" K-tec....hmmm hehe!! I just had to tinker with mine a lot to get it right! I loosened of my rear mounting and slipped 2 cable ties under mine to help keep the rubber from stretching and sogging, otherwise the exhaust bounced and banged in every direction. Try and fire it as close to the bumper as you can, and if it goes too high and hits / buzzes off the heat shields, take a screw driver to the heat shields and bend them away! dont u just hate that heatshields rattle on ya lowered car???

:D Rob

i had the problem.

jsut get ot on a ramp, get a acetelene torch on it (careful the fuel tank is right behind it) then bend the hander to lift the exhaust up....i did it and its fine.

Use stronger rubbers as the Ktec system weighs a TON and even mine needs the rear most rubber replacing every month or 2.

Problem sorted.

Where can I get some of them rubber things from then, cos mine looks like its on its last legs. Also im thinking if I can push the exhaust back a bit It looks like it will clear the back axle! But i dunno if its already been pushed back as far as it will go. if it is already all the way back im sure i could hacksaw a small part of the pipe off and shorten the exhaust couldnt I?

Mine knocks like a beast lowered about 40-50mm at the back it a magnex system and its knocking on the top beam. Only way rouns it from what i can see is either raise the car or takie it to powerflow and get them to make a system that will clear it.

Jonesy,

You can get them from rally spares..www.raldes.co.uk. The part number is px014 and they are called rally X plus exhaust mounts. Make sure you get the plus mounts and not just the rally X one as they are softer.

Tel number is 01795 531871 - you can get 3 for about £10, £15 with postage.

Good luck. Ive just mailed Magnex about my exhaust and they say they have not had any complaints of this nature before.....Ill wait and see what they come back with.

Ben, youve got to be kidding..I wouldnt trust myself with oxy acetylene torch. Id look round to get something and point the thing at the petrol tank! One nice charcoal grilled Clio!

Ive just had a mail from Magnex actually with a few suggestions on it so Ill give them a go. They too allow for lowering of the car so they reckon it shouldnt cause any problems.
