I currently have a Dell Inspiron 6000, which is a few years old, and other than the battery being knackered (just bought a new extra capacity one), it's fine, however, I wouldn't mind it being a bit smoother when doing a couple of things at one.

Can I just stick some more memory in to improve it enough to tide me over for another year or so?

How much will it cost? Is it easy to do yourself? Where is the best place to buy from?

The reason for buying the battery, was that I was going to buy a portable DVD player, but could get a new extra capacity battery for less than I was going to pay for the dvd player.

Make sure you take the new battery out of you are using it plugged in for long periods as it kills the battery - have just done the same!

Yep memory should cost around £15 a gig from t'net or £60 a gig from the high street! its very easy to replace

Depending what type (i.e. DDR, DDR2) you could pay upto £60/Gig on the internet.

What to expect:

DDR - anywhere between £40 -> £60 for a 1GB stick
DDR2 - from £10 for a 1GB stick

Yeah, I did that with this battery, it holds it's charge for 2 minutes now at the most, so won't be repeating that again.

How do I find out which it is? Is there any way to look on the computer, without taking it to bits - if that makes sense?
