do they just die over time?..

gradually over time i have noticed the battery level dropping considerably, it started off with a 3 hour battery life and eventually it became 10 minutes and now when i put it on the mains charger, the battery doesnt charge, it just runs on ac power

has it just died?

but i can still use my laptop right, just run it off the mains?

Yea.
And then buy a new battery

They dont last very long with the constant big power draws placed on them.

My last laptop battery had a malfunction light appear and it would only last about 20 mins! It used to last 5 hours!

It lasted two years with average usage before it went.

Yep, if I'm working on mains power, I always take the battery off first before plugging in.

I have the same problem with mine, I just run it off the mains

my battery on my sony has never been great. it runs off the mains most of the time
