You need to make sure you get one thats compatible, there alot of bearings on which one you can replace it with....

  Ph-Sold!
Not worth the effort, any significantly better processor will run on a different motherboard which likely wont fit in the casing etc etc

  Better than yours. C*nt.
Well it's not that difficult... I've done it to a Latitude D600, D610, D620, M65 Precision, Sony SZ2, Acer somethingorother, HP home laptop...

Usually fairly cheap to do as well.

That'd do as an improvement as the 3650 only ships with a Celeron M IIRC - that should run fine as long as you've got all the updates from the Acer website. At £25 it's worth a punt ;)

I'd also invest in some memory:

Again not much for a huge improvement. If you can see if it's got two slots for memory then you could go for 2x1Gb sticks, but it would appear from the net that 2Gb is it's max supported.

Pentium M 1.8Ghz from any Celeron (especially the 1.46Ghz that shipped in most 3650s) will be a massive improvement. And memory is very much the key to multitasking.

Cheers, I upgraded to 2GB mem during the week there so thats full. It doesn't help at all though because it had 1gb previously and doesnt use anymore than 800mb at the moment.

Think I'l invest in the processor and see what like I am at fitting it! lol

When it comes to laptops, its normally a good idea to sell and just buy an upgrade. They arnt the easiest things in the world to work inside of, and most manufacturers fabricate their parts so you have to buy from them. They then bend you over.

Hmmm Ill keep that in mind. At the end of the day the laptop can just slide into a drawer and I can just use the desktop.... Ill have a wee think! lol

Processors are a fixed size. You're actually a fair way from the truth - the insides now tend to be fairly standard (bar motherboard) - the memory is now a standard fit, as is processor, and the Wi-Fi/3G expresscards are the same. CD drives tend to be the same with a different bezel and the hard disks are now too...

For £25 I'd go for it, the Celeron M is a crock of shite and you'll notice a massive difference I should hope.

No, IIRC Centrino Duo started with Intel 945-series chipsets. The F20 runs 915 so you'll only be able to upgrade to a higher speed Pentium M. It is in these cases where unfortunately replacement is the only way of improving performance vastly. Where the OP has the option to go from a Celeron M to a Pentium M, you are already running one of the higher spec processors so have little headroom. Up the memory and do a clean install of XP, it's still a competent office/internet laptop for a while yet.

The best laptop I've encountered for doing an upgrade is the Sony SZ2 - it shipped with the 1st generation of Core Duo chips, and I've managed to run mine quite happily with the 2.6Ghz Core2Duo T7800. Dropped back to a 2.33Ghz T7600 though to keep battery life over 2 hours (on high performance settings and the nVidia card) and temperatures slightly more realistic. Dell D620s are also similarly upgradeable.

lol ye thats the problem, i use catia, solidworks, photoshop... etc. but when im doing s**t like that, i drop it into my clean tiny XP rather than XP-MCE so its not being drained by other s**t.

and ive whacked in another GIG of ram few months after i got it. i got it refurbed so picked it up for £600 when it was £900 in PC world.
then added £70 for 1gb of ram.

it still seems new to me, if i see a 2.13GHz chip on ebay going for £20 i may bung that in though!
