Laptop turning itself off

I posted a thread up not so long ago about my Advent laptop which is around 3+ years old now... turning itself off when watching online video (i.e - youtube etc).

The general feedback off the forum was that it is down to the fan inside the laptop which causes it to overheat and turn off.

Over the last couple of weeks ive been watching the laptop and basically I can leave the laptop on for as long as I want and it won't turn off/shut down by itself. I can watch videos i've downloaded onto my computer in winamp for as long as I want.

But whenever I go to watch a steaming video on something like youtube, that's the only time my laptop turns itself off after about 2-3 mins of watching the video.

Surely this can't be the fan and the laptop overheating as it would do the same for winamp?

Any ideas?

This did happen to mine and was told to get a can of air and blow out the fan and bits from undernieth.Amazingly it worked.Only ever use it on a table or if on my lap I put it on a tray,no problems since.Good luck

Couple of easy things:

1) Have you tried a fresh re-install of windows? (Complete system recovery)

2) Possibly a faulty wireless card causing the reboot on large data transfers.

3) Possible mainboard failure.

I would try a fresh install, i know its time consuming. But a fresh install with latest updates after install will clear up any software issues.

remember, when streaming graphics etc, the system is working harder. Ive had this on towers when the graphics card fan had died etc. Definately worth a good blow out

90% of these are just the in build protection against heat, normally you can remove the rear pannels to access the heat sink and fan and blow is out. normally the dust will be that thick and cloged you will have to remove it with tweasers.
