large plumes of white smoke?

  audi a6 3.0tdi
yesteday the car wouldn't rev at all then wouldn't start, now it runs pretty much fine but there are large clouds of white smoke which smells of petrol and oil. checked under the oil cap for white sludge and its fine. what could it be now? yesterday i was told it could be the coil pack or the tdc sensor but surely this will be a gasket problem? but what do i know any help would be appreciated before i take it to a garage and get charged thousands. thank you

Are you loosing any coolant ? and/or have you checked the coolant resevoir for gunge? although it's usually an obvious sign of the headgasket having gone you dont always get mayo as an indicator to confirm it.

coolant looks fine too and the temperature has never raised above half but i too think its probably the head gasket. what kind of price would i be looking for this? i just want to know if other people think its the same thing. cheers

sounds like head gasket to me too, you won't get water/oil mix if the gasket has only gone between the cylinder and the water gallery, any garage with a gas anyliser will be able to tell you straight away if it is the head gasket by holding the anyliser probe over the water res for a few seconds.

Sounds like coil packs mate! not many gaskets gone on 1*2 engines. how do you drive it, do you give it time to warm up before ya boot it? :)

i always let it warm up before driving it quick. if it was the coil pack why would it be chucking out white smoke? surely it would just run badly.

if it was the coil pack going it would miss and you would loose power. you will get a bit of smoke but not plumes of the stuff.
You firstly need to get a comp test done it will cost you a tenner then depending on the outcome of that decide where and when your going to get it fixed.

H.G by the sounds of it.

Compression test can be misleading, as it only takes a slight failure to leak in the chamber...but due to the very nature of the piston motion this may not show up as a measurable loss in compression, since the piston moves so fast.

Best to do a leak down test, or cooling system pressure test.

Other indicator is fill the header tank right to the brim, and watch for a trickle of small bubbles.
