Learner Driver

  172 + 350z
Not sure if this is a great idea but looking at letting a "learner" drive in my 182. Has anyone else ever done this and how did they find the insurance?
I can see a lot of comments on this been a bad idea lol

  M2 Comp
Surely the cost to insure a learner on a 182 would pay for a considerable number of lessons?

I have let my brother drive my 182 numerous times, he is still learning but he is pretty good tbh! I don't really see the issue personally, a driving school local to myself use Corsa VXR Nurburgring's as instructor cars, I know the owner well and he gets no issues.

IMO its not a great idea in any car, driving a car other than with an instructor while learning just tends to slow progress, getting into bad habits etc. Plus as said, the cost of insuring the learner would pay for quite a few "real" lessons

I suppose thats a good idea from an instructors point of view, i bet they get loads of business just because the learners want to drive a vxr!

  53 Clio's & counting
I let an ex of mine learn in my XR3i (Powerful enough for a leaner!) and another Ex I taught to drive in my 2.0 16v Mk1 (That would run in the 13's at Pod)

Both cars survived, both were additional drivers in my insurance.

Driving accasionally as a leaner (ie someone with them( i'd be happy with, but obiously not as a first car once passed

They are always rammed and charge something silly like £35 a hour lol!

You see I learnt by going out and taught by my parents. Only took 5 or so lessons and passed first time. Have mates that have done 20 lessons and at £25+ ago it soon adds up. Guess it depends on each individual. Just curious if it would be a killer on insurance, only way to find out is to call up I guess.

Only downside as far as I can see is the insurance. The car will be fine, it's no different to any other learner car.

I'm 24, doing my test in june, got a 172 cup for my first car and I've had quotes around the 1500 mark fully comp, 1200 tpft. Thats actually cheaper than a 1.2 saxo..... Don't ask me how, I double and triple checked, and it's right.

Loving life.

Probably your location and your age. It's usually triple that for a just passed 17/18 year old, on a 1.2!

I toyed with the idea of using my 182 to teach the Mrs to drive a number of years ago, the clutch IMO isn't suitable for a learner!

clutch is the only issue and heavy steering to get used to, were trying to get hold of a twingo 133 for an extended drive with the intention of swapping from 1.2 16v twingos

Will be cheaper than a 1.2 saxo as thats a car that doesnt exist ;)

  172 Cup
I think the clutch might be a bit difficult for a learner. I let my dad have a go in my cup, and even with 30 years driving experience he had trouble pulling away without spinning the wheels lol.

ive just insured a 1.2 clio at 17 and they wanted £2700 off me!! tried getting quoted on a 1.3 golf and they wanted 10k. depends on the age but you might struggle. And being a named driver on another car was more than MY OWN insurance!

Don`t see a big problem with teaching in a sport clio some insurance companies will let a learner go on policy for a month for £50. Only problem maybe the difference in clutch to the learners driving school car and adapting between cars if they have a driving instructor. I am all for practice in between lessons but it does need some sort of structure to each drive. Try and communicate with instructor and see what areas of driving can be improved on each drive. If the car has spacers be careful of the kerbs lol.

A guy in a village along from me who is a driven instructor had a mk2 mr2 for his learner car now he has a celica gt!!

taught my current missus the basics in my 172 cup and tbh i said you'll no doubt stall first time you go to pull away, i looked a right c**t when she didn't, she never seemed to struggle with the clutch ever and in fact gave it some beans on an aunt's land

I have my sister on my car insurance, she has a provisional only. Insurance went down £150....WTF?

Will she ever get to drive it....I think not

I used to have my gf on the insurance with a provisional as it was cheaper. Its once they've passed that the insurance rockets lol

Insurance is usually cheaper for provisional drivers, think about it logically - they HAVE to be accompanied at all times so will clearly be safer. How often to learners crash, rarely I would imagine. Then once they pass they are off on there own, this is when they are most likely to be in or cause an accident.

rather than start a new thread thought I'd ask in here.

My lad is currently on his provisional, and my wife has just broke her ankle. Anyone know if she can still supervise him even though her foot is in a pot?
Short of asking a traffic copper, I'm not sure where to get an answer - tried Google and didn't find much.

she's only been pottering all her life.
oh and as for supervising him, I think we will still be doing that when he's 40.

As Chris says ^ that's what the law requires you to have to accompany a learner.

You don't even need to be insured on the car as long as the learner is then it's fine! So I'd say yeah crack on!

  Track 172 Cup
well unless you have dual controls i cant see how it being in a cast having an effect on her supervising. I would have no problem going out if it was me (but i cant give you points or fine)
