Lens

Ok cool fair enough. If that is the case, and I buy a lens which needs calibration, the manufacturer will do this free of charge I presume?

Sigma will re-calibrate for free yes - takes about a month though

You can get a test card which you shoot at from a 45degree angle - will show you if it under/over focus's

Amazon are ok - you'd be dealing with sigma direct for any warranty issues anyway

Where can this test card be obtained Phil? Am I right in saying such issues wouldn't be so much of an issue at f11 on say the sigma 10-20 due to much beter dof?

You dont even need a test card. Just use some CF cards upright next to a ruler. Put 1 at 15cm or something and another at 18 and one at 12. Focus on the middle and look at the sharpest place on the ruler, thats the cheap and easy way to do things. As for f11 at 10mm, you've got pretty much infinite focus wherever you set your focus to.

I've not tried to use it at a concert though like yourself. I did hear that the f4L (non IS) is the sharpest of the group of those lenses? (f4L IS and the 2.8 IS) Not sure how true it is.

The new generation IS lenses are a tad sharper. But were not talking anything noticeable unless you're shooting test charts. IS really starts to benifit as soon as it starts to get dusky a little, once it gets dark I've found that under most street lights I can always manage 1/50th at 6400, without IS you simply cant shoot that. Im sure you can afford the 2.8IS, and the weight isnt that bad once you man up a bit ;)

Your much less likely to notice a focusing issue on a wide angle lens. Typically your shooting wide at distant objects, so DOF is emphasised as much as shooting F2.8 200mm @ 3m.

All the test cards do is provide a focus point with lines above/below (there are tons of ways of doing this quickly on the fly, fence posts, stones on tarmac etc..). If you AF on the centre but one of the lines above/below is actually in focus then you know you have a front/back focus. Naturally with a higher F number your DOF becomes greater and this becomes less noticeable.

The issues i had with Sigma lenses was not a Calibration issue, it was an accuracy. They were well calibrated for a zoom lens but just wouldn't track.

I suspect the strong used Sigma market hurts the reputation of their QC as there are lots of lenses that wont get a service in their entire life - not exactly a surprise if its stops working properly! But they are so easy to sell - why pay for a service...

Thanks guys, thats what I thought so if I go down the SLR route that lens may be my best 'cost effective' bet for ultrawide:D ABout £500 iirc

The 10-20mm Sigma is a superb lens for the money. I think theses go for nearer £350 used. The Canon 10-22 goes for nearer £500 and thats a stunning piece of glass.

Meh, I'm not THAT impressed with the 10-22, sure it has very little distortion compared to the sigma, but I just think the pics are ok, shots from my 17-55 are better.

I also rarely find a situation where I need to use it, probably my least used lens tbh.

Got the 1.4x TC tonight from lensesforhire, will see what that's like

still debating whether to take it with me tomorrow, could be useful for the landscapes?

i guess i just find it has too much top and bottom, i don't know, i know thats the point of it, but i just can't seem to find the right use for it.
maybe i'll take it to see if i can use it more.

already have the 17-55 and 70-200 packed, and the 1.4x extender, so its already a fair amount of weight in my hand luggage as it is.

10 - 22 is an epic epic epic lens in the right situation. If you cant get close to your subject you'll find that photos just look dull and everything just looks lost in the frame? Depends on your style of shooting as always tbh.
