lil help in deciding

hi guys, need a new car and quick coz mines a big pile of squidgy poo! was looking at 1.9 205s, but since mummy has offered to lend me the sponds on the technicality of payback or death, i can look forward a lil.

i was looking at the 1.8 16vs but ive read alot of bad reviews on them, terrible mpg, rusty rear archs, bad handling and always go wrong i.e g/box and very expensive to fix when they do so!

so now im a lil confused, lol i was also lookin at the 1.8 rsis, now they are ok, but how quick are they? will they keep with/beat my 205 1.6gti to 60? are there any good kits out there for them? are they gr8 underated cars? or are they nothing compared to the 16vs?!

1.8 16vs can be money pits if you buy a bad one.

As for bad handling thats just not right.

Rsis are underated very good cars.

Haha - Funny you should post this!

I went in a Mk1 RSi for the first time last night! Quick cars and should see off a 1.6 gti. But if you can get a valver, get one! The RSi is a good car but if youve been in a valver they just seem to lack something! Probs 16 valves, nicer interior and ofcourse those lurvely arches and bonnet!

A 16v will see off a 1.9 Gti too and have cheaper insurance!;)

As for 16vs going wrong - look for a good one and it should be ok!

Handling is sh*t hot! Its the Williams little bro you gotta remember!

Get a valver you know im right! Nothin better than a fitty drivin a Clio 16v!

not supersexyspeedy fom MR2oc???

ive had both. valver and 16v. the valver is better on petrol, handles better, is faster once youre out of 2nd gear and on motorways etc. its a lot beefier. comes with all the same goodies as the RSi though. the rsi shares all the same body parts as a RT so is a bit of a sleeper. the RSi is a better car if you do mostly town driving. you cant replace the noise of a 16v though-its something else. the induction roar is second to none. the RSi is a lot more pliant-the standard suspension on a valver is pretty rock hard.

yea it is the same sss lol! well i just got a quote on a 16v in my name 3rd party with the following mods

lowerd 40mm

alloys

exhaust

and it came to £1076

not too bad considering ive held my lisecnce for less than a year, cheaper than the 1.9 but only slightly, and i do have a dimma stlye bodykit that i could fit to a 1.9 and insure with every mod under the sun (except lowering!) for an extra £40!

im so confused, i want either a 1.9gti or a 16v...but shelling out £2000 for a valver and not having it fully comp is silly, damnit sum1 sway me!

I think you should go for a valver, the Rsi has the same sort of problems as the 16v but the it does not have the bonnet bulge, flared arches and extra performance of the 16v. Make sure you get a good one though as there are a lot of sh*tters about, get a mint one and youll be smiling every time you drive it.

well, sss, being a cracker;) youll suit the valver.

if you do go for one, look for one with a fsh and dont be put off by slightly higher mileage ones as chances are they have had most of the expensive jobs done already. most engine repairs on the valver mean an engine out job whereas they dont on the RSi. i spent just as much fixing up my RSi as i did on my valver.

see if you can blag yourself a go in the valver-thatll sway you!

well i think i will go for the 16v but the only reason im goin for one is coz i want a newer, slighty more reliable low milage car. i meann i could get a mint 1.9 with low milage on a 92 for less than a valver but there is always gonna b the prob of reliability, so am i gonna buy a 16v for around £2000 and be happy or f**king fustrated at repairs n the fact that they will b ten times more expensive than the pug?!

i was always told not to pay less than 2.5 and not to go for anything higher than 90k and nothing older than a 94!

what do you think of these? theyre not the best and 1 doesnt say milage (ill find out) but its in my price range!

mine was a 93, L reg and had 82k on the clock and had already had all the big jobs done so even though it was an older car i didnt have to worry about the high cost of the big repairs. make sure its had the cambelt changed as thats an engine out job as is a clutch change etc. most will rust on the rear arches at some point-you pretty much expect them too, lol.

when they do work they are well worth it though-great fun. smile on your face driving and thats what its all about.

have in the look of the for sale section on here and other renault forums maybe. at least then you know they have been looked after by enthusiasts and you wont get shafted with a dodgy motor

cool, well i think my minds pretty much made up, ill ring back those ppl who wanted to buy my kit (and i lied saying id sold it wen i had wanted to keep it lol) and ill tell em its up4sale still, that should pack a couple of hundred quid for me!

i cant test drive one as i dont have that insurance but ive already driven my mums willams 2 on da roads(shushhhhh), and thats the b****cks!

got a mechanic b.f and im also training to be one so shouldnt have to worry bout nethin major coz he will be able to spot it n consquently help me in the future if nethin gos wrong!

right, im happy now :D

cheers guys, ya advice/info has helped loads

What he said^^, if I was buying a Williams/16v again I would only buy from a private seller, preferably a enthuisiast owned car. Trader car are more likely to be touched up trade ins with hidden faults.IMO

I get 30 mpg out of my valver and most of my driving is round town so its ok on the fuel. Obviously its not the cheapest car to run but i love driving it - its just so much fun and looks class even standard, not that theres many standard ones about. I dont think youll be disappointed if you get one but its worth paying that bit extra for a well maintained one. Buy one of the better ones from on here and i dont think youll go far wrong.
