Mainstream or obscure character choices in games?

Basically, on par with the poll on Bioware's main site for Mass Effect 2.....

... I actually picked the least popular (engineer) before I'd even seen that poll. I tend to do that a lot, regardless of the type of game - going for the least obvious and less mainstream type of character.

I think it it adds more to the game, imo. For 80% of the time you'll be finding it tougher going than other classes, but there comes the other 20% of the time where your class excels, where the other are left struggling.

Perhaps that also explains where I spent most of my Battlefield 2 time as anti-tank and my Battlefield 2142 time as an engineer also?

I'm not even sure there's a way to describe my choices in most games

I spent a couple of years as a medic playing RTCW

Hmmm I chose the 'Royal' class in Demons souls as I had heard its the easiest starting class but then the game was billed as very hard which influenced my choice of starting character.

I normally go assault in Battlefield so guess i'm a mainstream kinda guy!
