Hi all. Took the car out for a drive and on the way home it died, rattled from the engine and sounded like stuff was hitting the underside of the car, had to coast it to a near by car park (a pub fortunately). when i tried to start it up again it just made a wereing sound. any ideas???

Thanks for your reply, are you on about the belt on the left hand side of the engine that i can see? if so then yes it looks fine. was it expensive to repair your valve problem??

If it was a dropped valve , better off putting a good second hand engine back in .

yes the belts on the left. It certainly wasn't cheap, I picked up a replacement lump from a fourm member for £400

My moneys on snapped timing belt or dropped valve. Bad news for your wallet anyway dude

Crap Mechanic, wouldn't run if it was the belt gone eh? probably just a bit of death rattle / crank gone, dropped valve would be rattling around the top no?

If it sounded like bits under the car, then I reckon like Dan says a rod has got scared of the dark and made a break for freedom.

Where does he say it was still running?

My bad I guess I read that as fired up and made a weird noise, guess he means Whirring sound which is belt gone I suppose, have a habit of not reading stuff lately.

The rattling under the car noise could also have been the valve heads making their way off down the exhaust of course.

TBH its a bit irrelevant if its a rod gone or the valves horrifically mashed or both, cause either way its new engine time!

i spoke to the garage again tonight and he said that the belt had probably been stripped of some teeth and not actually snapped, either way im going to sell the car as i dont have the time to break the car down to sell for parts or wait to have it fixed. oh.....and i cant face seeing her on my drive broken.

  Many.
One rib of the Aux belt ripped off, gone into timing belt covers and caused belt to slip, 14 bent valves!
