metal shards found in inlet manifold !

hi everyone , my 172 started playing up about 3 weeks back , cutting out and misfiring so i took it to my local garage and on further inspection they found metal shards inside the inlet . they have been trying to find out what is causing this but have had no luck so far . anyone heard of this before ?i have now told them to stop because i can't afford to have them keep working on it , its been been 3 weeks and they still haven't found anything , any help would be appreciated

im not too sure mate , i haven't been back to the garage yet but they told me they have 3 or 4 piles of them ...its not sounding good . I'm thinking i might just stop trying to get it fixed and sell the car as a non runner
