Mk1 172 clutch

i drive a golf company car and rarely drive me clio - anyway after a 2 week break from clio driving i took it for a razz.

the first thing that i noticed was how heavy the clutch is, id forgotten about this as the golf is almost feather light

question is why are they so heavy? the golf has far more torque as its the gt tdi and its light in comparison.

Probably still due to the pedal design. The 16v and RSi Clio versions had really heavy clutches and a tendency because of it for broken clutch cables.

Thats Renault for you.

The Golf has a hydrolic clucth although that shouldnt have much bearing unless its assisted.

Id guess one reason is the clutchs arnt huge so they need good strong springs so you need a load of force to seperate them.

eddes right.

its the combo of no assistance and a strange pedal design. LHD cars are slightly lighter iirc.

i agree with Day though, makes it feel good to abuse. although not so much in stop/start queues.

everything about my 172 is spot on,but the one thing i really hate is the biting point on the clutch especially start/stopping and holding it on a hill its not high or worn it just seems to snatch, its a pain in the ass,lol though the wife seems to drive it perfect.

Ever tried changing the cable... it helps...

I know they are stiff, my R5 GTT is the same, I believe its the same setup, but a new cable does make them better. Also the same on the 306 GTi-6 they are just a firm pedal.

Im not too keen on the clutch on mine either, very snappy if you know what I mean especially if its not warmed up yet, my girlfriend hates driving it!

Ive chnaged mine on the WIllaims and its no different.

Only time it got

Better was when I went for a performace clutch back to standard as the standard one is ligther.
