are they usually strong enough to hold 6x9s or would you recommend me reinforcing it or buying a new one.

It will be strong enough to hold the speakers, but it may vibrate and buzz when you get some sound through them. Thats the reason why people have MDF shelves. You could try without and if needs be reinforce it later?

Mine are fine but i dont use an amp tho, just a 4x50 pioneer hu, speakers are JBL GTO936s (100W RMS / 300W Peak)

I run kicker 6x9s off a Alpine 4x60w with my standard my mk1 shelf and they boom out and produce good quality sound.
