i have just brought a 96 n reg clio paris is it a mark 1?

yes its a mk1. Depending on whether its an early or late N plate, its either a phase 2 or 3 model.

does it matter what phase it is when buying bits if they show mk1 on them?

an n reg is a mk1 phase 2 clio.some engine parts may differ from the mk1(some mk1s will be on carbs instead of injection).the exterior is near enough the same.
