Mk2 Key - Waterproof?

Anyone know if the Mk2 Clio key is waterproof?

I'm stuck for what to do with it when out in the sea...

  Audi A4 1.8T Sport
i went surfing with my keys in my pocket. were nice and rusty by the time i got home :(

light doesnt work any more either :(

I've found THIS but still... the keys are fooking expensive to risk f**king up.

Anyone managed to get a non-electric key cut at a locksmiths?

You can get one cut down the locksmiths in southbourne which will have the transponder chip for the ECU in it. (I would still seal it somehow though) Cost me £17.50 a few years ago but I bet its nearer the £30 mark now!

really? cheers Matt

Next question, if I open the doors with the key in the lock... how do I stop the alarm from going off?

erm pass on that one, i remember doing it once you just have to quickly stick the key in the ignition which stops the alarm (this was on my astra mind) unless of course you know a way to disable the alarm?

Put it in one of those small tupperware boxes if your in a boat if your surfing or something... God knows :S

In the sea doing what? A small sealable box would be best bet.

sorry, talking about surfing so boxes aren't really an option.

Wetsuit and boardies have small zipped pockets, but obviously they're not waterproof.

keep your key with immobiliser and alarm somewhere hidden in car and just use your cut key to lock the doors with?

Hidden electrical key in the car and s**tty cut key out in the surf is winning so far... not sure I would trust one of those waterproof aquapac pouches above.

Where you going surfing mate? A few hire places I've seen have lockers so you can lock up your stuff and take a locker key out with you in your suit/shorts. worth a shout if there's any hire places where-ever your going!

We went to Cornwall a few weeks back and had the same problem, ended up leaving our bag with keys in stashed in some rocks on the beach!

Sealable bag kept inside your wetsuit is best mate. Work pretty well.

Or as Mt audio says, disable alarm, get a key cut that just opens the door, and keep other key inside car to start it.

droped mine down the toilet once, took me 5mins to be brave enough to stick my hands in my own turd, key was spot on no moisture made it inside!

a guy i knew taped his key on his wishbone came back his car was gone... he never did that again!
ive seen on a gadget website might have been firebox you can get a padlock with a compartment that you lock to something might be worth a look?

The waterproof bags are good. Ive never had one leak. Always keep it inside my wetsuit though to stop me from losing the bag!!!

yeah? would you trust an electronic key in one under the wetsuit? which one do you have, that aquapac one i linked to above seems popular on the surf forums...

Don't usually have this problem because my car usually stays at the campsite, but its the only car going in a few weeks so will have to think of something!

I trust my key in there and touch wood its been fine so far!!

Looking at the link thats exactly the same bag ive got. I know you can get chepaer ones but I wouldn't want to risk it.

awesome, do you wear it around your neck under the wetsuit when out in the surf? Its good to hear feedback on it as it's the kind of thing you don't want to risk! I'll buy one and test it out in the bath.

cheers Aaron

No problem. I always have it round my neck and under the wetsuit that way theres no way of losing it! Definately worth trying in the bath as well just incase you get a faulty one.

For those who are interested... the Aquapac Key pouch above works spot on. Had a full 10hr testing session in the bath yesterday and it didn't let a drop of water in, just a little bit of condensation developed which isn't a problem.

With the bath test, did it get bashed about and squashed like it would do on the inside of your wetsuit? Any air in there that got squashed would try and pop open the top seal.

Both me and my sister have clio's and surf. We both took our spare keys apart and took them to the local key cutting shop and had a spare made and then just put it on string round your neck. Hide the proper key in the car, lock the car with the central locking button then lock the passenger door with the new key.

using the central locking button on the dash, or on the key? Does the alarm still set when you lock it with one door open?

I squeezed the air out of it before I sealed it, as I guessed this would be the case when out in the surf. However I would still rather have a spare non-electric key cut as a backup like you do.

Passenger door open, central locking button on the dash then use the key. TBH I can't remeber about the alarm.
