Mk3 and XL tyres?

Looking into a set of new tyres for my mk3 with the 16" rim (like in my av) and the size is 195/50 R 16 88V, basically extra load. Do they have to be extra load? and if so, why?

That many I seem to remember that you were using them as seat covers?

Renault obviously specced them for a reason but I can't quite see why. 195/50/16 88V are expensive too!
