Mobile Phones: What is a 'Push Message'?

Good evening everyone,

Tonight on my phone I recieved a message called a 'Push Message'. It said 'Hi There ', does anyone know what they are and how they are sent?
Its not possible to reply and there is only an information option for the message that says a web address.
I am on Vodafone contract if that helps.
