Monitor recommendations?

  Turbo'd MX-5 MK4
I currently have 2 x 27" Viewsonic monitors, one of which has recently died (flickers and keeps turning itself off)

I'm therefore looking at replacing both of them, 27" is the smallest I will go and tbh the only sensible option seems to be the Dell U2711 (I'm not interested in 3D)

Anyone got one of these or other recommendations? I've had enough of cheap TN panels.

The 2560 x 1440 resolution seems a bit odd, but it's a highly rated monitor.

IIRC i'm sure I read it's the same panel as the Apple 27"

It's a lovely screen.

Out of interest, what resolution is your old working one? I'm after a cheap large monitor so if you are looking to sell..... ;)

I will be selling it, it's 1920 x 1080 and it's model VX2739WM if you want to look it up.

I don't rate IPS panels for gaming regardless of your lack of want for fweee deee, but that screen has great clarify and colours. Have one in the office and it's great value. Saying that, TF panels may be better for gaming but the colours are no where near as good tbh.

The only down side with DELL is that if you have a warranty quibble they will replace your screen with a refurb, which will more than likely be cosmetically f**ked as they're checked by thicky Mc Lickys in some hole in the ground.

I have the 24" version of the Dell and it's great. I use it primarily for photo editing but also play games on it without any problems. I would have loved the 27 but couldn't justify the extra cost at the time.

I'm still torn on this tbh.

Dell U2711: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/27-d...mi-2xdvi-d-display-port-5-x-usb-8-in-1-reader

Nice high resolution for when working from home etc, people say it's not a gamers choice and is laggy etc but others say its not an issue, its still 60Hz.

Asus VG278H: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/27-a...1080-50k1-300cd-m-2ms-speakers-plus-nvidia-3d-

120Hz, 3D, great for gaming but the image quality will no doubt not be as good as the Dell and how much will I really play in 3D?

Then finally the Samsung:

120Hz & 3D again, I would have to connect via HDMI as there are no DVI connections and tbh I'm not sure I like the design that much and I also think that 2 of them side x side will look even worse.

I think the Dell & the Asus side by side functionaly would be the best of both worlds, but prefer to have both monitors idenitcal.

I'm swaying towards the Dell given that I think the 3D technology is just at its starting point and in reality I will probably hardly use it, if the Dell plays games well enough then I'd rather have the higher resolution the rest of the time.

I guess the big question is, is 120Hz worth having over 60Hz? I will PM Mr Munson to see how he's getting on with his Samsung.

Seriously mate, the difference in gaming on a 120hz monitor compared to a 60hz monitor is phenomenal. I'm sure Mr Munson will confirm this to you. :)

120Hz for 2D does feel massively different. Not surprising seeing as it's double! Everything seems massively smoother :). I've the 23" ASUS, so maybe a bit small for you, but it's a great screen

I've had all these monitors.

First off 27" 1080p res looks s**t. Even with 120hz. The 24" asus model s***s all over it as the pixel pitch is at the sweet spot. the 2ms response time on it also makes the dell look a little sluggish, but only really noticeable when you've got them side by side.

If you want 27" i would say get the dell, the u2711 has a higher resolution than the older models and it gives you plenty of 'room' to use on a desktop.

If this is for gaming, i woudn't go for the dell though. If you want a decent 27" panel @ 1080p the best you'll get are the samies but again, pixel pitch ain't good at that size.

/2p

Thanks David, oddly enough the monitor has been behaving itself since so I've not done anything yet, but I had pretty much decided I was going to go for the Dells as whilst I do play games its not the majority of the time and I think I would appreciate the resolution of the screens more. I'm currently on 2 x 27"s @ 1080p and know what you mean about the resolution vs screen size.
