It depends how you want to go about it. Purely software with a midi controller or hooking up decks and using timecoded vinyl.
If you are starting from scratch then Ableton Live is where most people are going as it is so versitile and a whole new approach. Sasha uses it instead of CDJ's and Vinyl now. There are lots of tutorials on the web too. There are other programs like Traktor and as mentioned, Virtual DJ. You will need a midi controller and mixer to control these programs. There are some all in one controllers that you don't need to use a mixer with too. Like this;

The other method is if you have existing decks. A program like Serato scratch hooks up your decks to your pc or notebook and uses timecoded vinyl to play back files from your computer. It's just like using normal vinyl.

I sort of missed the CDJ boat. I played vinyl for 10 years then switched over to Ableton. If I had the money I'd probably get some to mess around with though. Still have my 1210's which I really need to set up again as I miss the hands on feel!

  None
I use a program similer to Virtual DJ - does the job fine. Really recommend having 2 soundcards tho to monitor the other song

Are you sure? I've never heard of anyone djing with FL Studio/Fruity Loops. The only programs that I know people are using to dj are Ableton Live and Acid. Although even Acid users use Ableton to warp the tracks properly first.

It isn't that expensive either! If you supply it "free of charge" how will the developers be able to improve their software? I'm all for ripping off Microsoft but if you are serious about music production and djing help the developers by purchasing their products. We'd only lose out in the long run.

I'd say calling Virtual DJ s**t a bit excessive too. It isn't! Although it is fairly basic, it does the job and is easy to use with a decent controller. Good for a beginner.
