any suggestions - want it really user friendly - not too expensive although not sure what i can get for money yet so hard to gauge how much i want to spend....

Nikon and Canon must be making a mint at the moment!

Basically the main options are the Nikon D40 at £299.99 with 18-55mm Kit Lens, or the Canon EOS 400D at £419.99 with 18-55mm kit lens.

Nikon obviously sounds the better deal, but it lacks an AF motor so you have to be careful what lens you buy (they all work, but some are manual focus only), the Canon works with every lens.

400D is good, but as its been said many times.... go have a go with them both in the shops before you decide.
