my car being opened by 2 different keys

ive got an 04 dynamique, and my mate has a 51 dynamique aswell, his key opens my passenger door, and turns my ignotion, but wont start because of the immobiliser, and mine does exactly the same...

i went to my local renault today where i bought the car and told them, they said they cannot do anything about it, but gave me renaults customer service number...i rang them and told them, and they told me to get my car and my mates to my local renault dealer and show them, and then get the dealer to ring customer services.

i told the dealer i was worried about my car being broken into because it seems to me that every clio key will open my car door, they said its a once in a million thing that another key will open my car, but both open each others, surely that cannot be right?

what can i expect renault to do, because i am genuinely concerned about my car now!
should i expect something?lock change?should i contact someone like trading standards?(first think that came into my mind!)

any help will be greatfully accepted!

probably not alot will happen, say there are 10,000 different key configurations....how many cars are there?

It's all down to probability of someone having same key as yours, wouldnt really worry about it too much.

Get a CAT1 alarm... Only thing I can think of really.

Don't worry bout me :rasp: Plenty of Clios round here to be getting on with :D

I just need to find a Trophy, then half an hour at night with some tools and I can sell someone on here some Recaros;)

At college a mate had a VW Polo and our IT teacher had a VW Golf and he could open her car and start it up with his key.

True story.

renault wont to fook all.

They probably be over joyed they made somit exactly the same twice!!! lol

  BMW M3
I heard a story the other day about a guy witha 3 series who could open his wifes Mini. Seems rather common.

All our keys can open each others petrol caps.

And apparently you can lock any ford with any ford key... just not open it. lol

yeh was thinking that, but will be alot wont it to have it smoothed and sprayed up.

wish my mate had never showed me!

forgot to mention before, neither mine or my mates key will open another friends 1.2 8v 03 plate? do the dynamique and authentique's have different locks??

  Audi TT 3.2 V6
i remember 10-15 years back my uncle had a mk1 escort and my nan had a mk2 fiesta....both keys not only opened both cars but started them lol

doesnt surprise me that much really... i mean when u think about the gazillions of cars they produce every year, to give each one a totally unique key the thing would probably be a foot long!

agree tho it is kinda worrying. i thought thats why they went keyless with the laguna/megane? why didnt this transmit to the rest of the range?

even more glad i've got a toad alarm system now!!

lol, it's like £5 to buy a blade for the key. Anyone in the know could have it cut and it'd fit a Clio door but as you say the immobiliser will prevent it starting. As said before there are only so many combinations to the keys. It's the electronics that the security relies on.

This is the case with EVERY sort of car.

In fact its the case for all uses of key-type locks.

There are only a limited number of ways you can cut a key. If they sell more than that then necessarily lots of other peoples keys will fit your lock, and your key will fit lots of other peoples locks. You just rarely meet the people for whom that's the case, because who tries their keys in other peoples locks.

I got laughed at when I suggested that all Ford keys will lock any ford car, but not open it awhile back! f*****s!
