My Clio search...Anyone gone from a 200 to something older?

Hi guys, just signed up in the hope of purchasing a Clio sport from this forum.

I used to have a Clio 200 that I took to Fred at BTM for servicing etc, it was unfortunately written off and I'm now searching for something cheaper (200 was on finance) no longer want finance on a car.

Anyway I found one advertised for my budget around 2 hours away from me, called the seller, arranged a viewing, he gave me his postcode etc, turned up at his house, saw the car outside but for some reason he refused to answer the door, and ignored my phone calls. I wasn't pleased obviously after having travelled over 2 hours. Not even sure what happened, I never heard from him again.

So i decided to join this forum in the hope I find a decent car with a seller that isn't going to take the piss. I found a nice one in the classifieds sold by "Clart" but he's not selling for 2 weeks unfortunately and I need something sooner.

Anyway has anyone ever gone from a 200 to an older Clio? What one was it 172? 182. Etc and how did you find the differences?

Cheers

I went from a company car 197, to a privately financed 200, then back to a ph1 172.

They have their plus points and minus points so I'd suggest driving a few. The 172/182 is quite soft ride wise compared to a cup packed 197/200.
The newer heavier 197/200 feels slower than a 172/182 also.
I used to average 23/26 mpg in my 200 and I get 35 out of my 172/182's.

If it was my money, budget dependant, I'd either have a ph1 172 (they look better for me) or a 197. I could be persuaded into a nice Racing blue 182 though.

@Chi usually advertises cars - it's his trade I believe.

Just click his name in this message and "start a conversation". He will let you know what he has.

Cheers for the helpful reply. My budget wouldn't stretch to a 197 so that's out of the question.

I'm only looking at spending around 2grand, from what I've seen its either decent 172 money or okish 182 money.

Still gutted about my 200, I absolutely loved it. It wasn't the quickest thing on the road, and obviously without a turbo there wasn't much option for power increases, as opposed to a turbo car where a simple remap generally adds around at least 30bhp.

For some reason I can't edit my first post, I wanted to add pictures but have to post them here instead.

£2000 will buy you a really nice 172.

Whatever you buy, make sure the Cambelt kit/aux belt kit have been replaced by someone that knows what they're doing. Preferably a specialist on here.

If you buy one that's been timed up wrong it will be slow and have s**t fuel consumption.

Did you buy back from the insurance?

I'm sure I saw someone on here yesterday who had bought a white 200 with this exact damage so they could rebuild. Think it was a trader.

Cheers for the advice. I've been doing a bit of reading up on them and as you say know that I'd want one with the cambelt done as its one of the most expensive things on the car (service wise) and can have nasty consequences if it hasn't been done.

I know it sounds silly but I prefer the way the 182 looks as the 172 looks really subtle, although I appreciate for my budget, beggars can't be choosers.

Out of interest how are the 172 and 182 with regards to mileage? As I've seen a few advertised with much more than 100,000 miles. Can they last provided they've been service regularly?

The engines (providing they've had regular servicing) will go on forever. Very very strong engines.

No I didn't want to buy it back. I had the option but I just lost love with it after. I had spent a s**t load in it. I had a new gearbox fitted just before it had been crashed. And was driving a couple of hours each time to get the car serviced in Birmingham. Someone contacted me with a picture of it, so it is back on the road, they wanted to know the previous history of it etc.

After it was written off I bought a corsa vxr which I hated. It handled like a boat, even with the suspension sorted. The brakes weren't a patch on the brembos either (although I imagine a corsa Nurburgring/club sport would drive closer to a Clio 200). Only plus point was it was easy to get a lot of power. Stage 3 was 250bhp and with an ignition Rev limiter I'd get massive flames out the exhaust.

I've done exactly what you're planning. Tbh there's very little about the 200 that I preferred over a 172. With your budget id go along with advise already given, a 172 with the belts done. Most 182's will be tatty at that money.
Personally love the ph1's. But you have to be willing to put up with an interior that looks 10yrs older than the ph2 cars.

Interior doesn't bother me so I can live with that.

Out of interest in terms of the drive, what are the differences in terms of acceleration, handling and braking between the 200 you had and the 172?

The 200 with cup pack felt like it was glued to the floor, I've never had a car like it (was my first Renaultsport), and the brakes were really good.

As you say I'm at the lower end of 182s with my budget but what about something like this? http://www.cliosport.net/threads/renaultsport-clio-182-arctic-blue-£2000.765849/

And if going for a 172, is the cup the one to go for?

That one looks great. 172/182's aren't as stable and planted as 200's. That's why I prefer them. Brakes are very good on the 172, but 200 brembos are definitely better. 172/182 feel quicker, due to lower weight and similar torque, in reality there's very little in it.
Cup had no abs, no air con (usually)

Clart's 182 looks really tidy, he's a very active member on here too; trustworthy. The milage is high, but I don't think you'll get a more sorted 182 for the money, and milage means nothing on these.

It certainly looks nice from the pictures and I had a read of the linked threads.

I have sent him a message earlier this morning. Only "issue" is he's not looking to sell for 2 weeks and I'm looking to buy asap.

I travelled over 2 hours to see one recently and the seller wasted my time. Was advertised on auto trader. I joined a forum as I think I'll find a better car for sale, especially from a forum member with threads showing car from start to finish etc

As above, might be worth waiting of possible!

Well I've messaged him and Chi and hopefully will get a response. They might be put off by the fact I've only just joined although everyone has to start from somewhere.

Only reason I joined was to get access to the classifieds due to being messed about by a seller on autotrader.

What appeals with Clarts car is there wouldn't be much to do modifcation wise, it would just be a case of maintenance and possibly sorting a few bits, the drivers sill paint flaking he mentions and also the light that goes off due the resistor.

Just pm him I sold him my ph1 172 odssey blue and it had lots of mods plus the belts don't need doing for at least 2 years , I would buy it back if I had room to store it

Cheers I did send him a message earlier, so will see what he comes back with.

Do you have a thread on your car that I could look at please

Resistor is an easy fix. @Chi is a good chap. Normally has a few clios available.

  BG Clio 182
Yeah Sod's law :(

Appreciate the offer though, I'd have taken you up on it without a doubt
Haha no worries. I did the same when I was looking to buy and it did me good and focused my mind that I wanted the 182 over the 172, and that I knew I wanted one instead of maybe an RX8 or something equivalent.

Well I've come to the conclusion that I defintely want a 182 over the 172s.

Chi has been very helpful and shown me a few cars he has for sale but unfortunately none of them are suitable for me.

So the search for a 182 will continue, preferably in a "bright colour" blue, orange etc (not black).

I appreciate that my budget won't allow me to have a massive selection but from what I've seen 2000 to 2500 should be achievable in getting a 182.

For 2,500 you'll get a nice 182.

A 182 feels a little sportier. It just does. It looks more purposeful with the twin exhausts and the lack of spare tyre etc just tells you they've fucked practically and their out and out name was power and speed.

They are similar cars but to me, the 182 feels more special. Thing is, you'll get more for your budget 172 wise. Power wise they are the same really so you are just paying for the looks and if that isn't important to you, get the 172.

There's a racing blue 182 with belts and dephaser done, on Facebook.
'Renault cars and parts for sale' page.
£2000 he wants. Located in Wales.

  Pug 206 SW, 172 CUP
182 FF was Renaults go at putting the 172 cup's pace and handling with the normal 172's comfort. Having run a 182 FF on and off track before the Cup I think they did a Damn good job. I now have a Cup because I wanted a simple as feck bean can to use for occasional track days and back roads only.

  172 cup (again)

I've a fab 172 cup for sale - just posted in the for sale section

  RB + LY 182 FF
Bargains are out there. I sold my 55 plate BG 182 two weeks ago for £1700 was needing cambelt change but was immacualte and on bilsteins suspension. Had deposit on RB 182 as I was after that colour for ages.

I got the RB for £1500 and is FF . Both keys very tidy.. It needed cambelt change.. But wasn't willing do it on both cars hence the BG going cheap.
Pics of both cars. No other faults and like I said bargains to be had.
