So, I sold the Monaco 172 to Mark off here, a local who lives on the same street as Jesus. He seemed pleased enough with it, and I was a little sad to see it go.

However, that evening, I was on my way to Blackppol (Essex of the North) with a fist full of cash, but reservations in my mind. A "mate of a mate" had a car for sale. It seemed to tick all the boxes, but after having a few of these before, I knew I was most probably going to look at a rotter. The measurement of "mint" seems to vary a lot and in my book, its best to go with the intention of coming away empty handed.

Anyways, I arrive in Fleetwood, meet said lad at an industrial unit, and proceed through the huge gates. I am confronted by a familiar and awesome sight....

So, what is it I hear you cry........

Well, she is a Mercury Grey Series 2 RS Turbo

Had a right good look arounds her. Straight, clean shell, no dents or mis matched colours. Really clean.... I was having to hold back my excitement :D A check underneath revealed some previous work, but to a very high standard, and in the usual suspect places. I wasnt worried at all. Most of the bits I expected to be rotton away were there and in full order, hard as nails. Sills were spot on, chassis rails good etc etc. I then popped the bonnet.....

BLING

1800 ZVH (zetec bottom end and CVH head), with all the trimmings. To be honest, I am not into all the shiney s**t, so it will all go up for grabs and be replaced with standard stuff. You will also note the usual area for these to fail is the battery tray......... not so in this case:

A hunt through the history and receipts revealed some nice finds, and its had some serious cash ploughed into it in the past. All in all, a very well looked after car.

So, a deal was struck. She is getting a couple of little bits looked at this week, mainly interior, and then going for an MOT. Then, once she has a ticket, she will be trailored to MSD in Blackpool, a well know RS Tuner, who will set it up "safe", until I have amassed a few parts to get it running EFI with cossie management.

To cut it short, I was excited.

Then I get home, and do a little research. Turns out, this car was used between 1998 and 2001 as a Spec R Show car, hence all the bling under the bonnet. I got in tocuh with the previous owner who sent me these pics from back in the day:

And the last time he saw it in 2002:

Roll on my return from Egypt when I get to pick her up. I can't wait. Already bought a standard airbox, and some exhaust wrap to keep inlet temps down under the bonnet.

Shopping list in the immediate future is:

88 spec dark grey/red trim to replace 90 spec
ACT in/out LED guages
GRS Front mount cooler
Twin Spal Fans
Newman Cam and solid lifters

Awesome mate! Great buy!

All of these smell the same lol, you won't know what I mean unless you've been in one.

  Turbos.
The thing i don't get is that they weren't even good in their day, so why do people get so excited about them now? It looks so pony lined up next to those other Cosworths too...

An Escort Cosworth is a true special, it has rally heritage, famous names associated with and isn't FWD. What is special about this one? Genuinely, please someone explain.

Sorry if that is a verbal stamping on your heart...lol.

I'n not an S2 fan per se but fantastic buy mate.

People who don't quite get it I kind of understand but it is a heritage thing. Rob I understand the rally thing but it's still an old school Ford with an RS badge. It tingles the balls even if it's not that good. I don't particularly think the MK1 Focus RS is an amazing car, doesn't fail to tingle my balls though.

The S1 still flutters my heart when I see them in the flesh, the repsect it commands, the heads it turns. Fords do that to people. Some people.

I think its the fact that they were soo sh1t is half the appeal.
  1. You improve your mechanical skills by fixing it every other weekend - so it works as a nice hobby
  2. You improve your bodywork skills cutting out, filling & treating the rust every other weekend - useful for when rendering/painting your house
  3. Learning to control wheelspin/understeer through steering that not only weighs 3 tonnes, but offers no feedback, whilst attempting to get 230bhp of 'high boost' bhp's onto the tarmac in the damp is quite amusing.
  4. It takes you back to when you were 16/17, reading Max Power whilst sat on the sh1tter, dreaming of the day you could afford the insurance.
Personally, i've always wanted one, in fact the 1st 'quick' car i ever went in was my headteacher's S1 ERST at the tender age of 6.

That got me hooked on cars, & my bank balance has never really recovered ...

used to have a massive soft spot for these, gone off them a tad now but can appreciate a tidy one!

Phil had a few of these things, a few years back. Although moonies white one was the best.

where is the angry swan now adays? i know that maroo still has his (your) old cabby though

Love it....Don't care if the S2 hasn't got the pedigree of the S1, it's still an iconic car in my opinion.

When people say they don't get them because they weren't 'good' in their day completely misses the point. They were an integral part of the 80's classic hot hatch era regardless. Not to mention the cult thing being an RS branded ford.

In that grey colour too, it's perfect. Prefer them standard tbh and market values reflect this but at least that looks perfectly standard on the exterior. How much did you giveif you don't mind me asking?

perfect car, great colour combo.

and momo arrows back in the day! when i was 16 i used to write down a wish list for my non-existent nova and arrows where top of the list!!!

Who the f**k are you?? LOL

The swan was sold a long time back. Never heard anything further on that. Shame, was a powerful beast, but that was broke more than mine ever was!! Used to chew through boxes like they were cheese.

Maroo is collecting parts to conver that cabbie to EFI. I tried tempting him to sell it back to me, but he was having none of it

I really dont undertand the folk that say "they werent good in their day" How many of you lot had your licence in 1990? Or even 1996??

They had 132bhp, recaro seats and an LSD as standard. They would trounce a Golf GTi 16v instandard form, let alone after a couple of tweeks.A totally different car to the cossie in everyway, so it cant be compared to that

Haha, it's so true mate.

Great buy, as a Ford fan I'm well jel. My mate has a freshly painted S1 shell in his garage with everything to go in it, but hasn't bothered to make a start on it yet. It's been that way for over a year ffs.

All of the older fords seem to have a 'ford' smell...glad it's not just me that's noticed it. Did u think it about your MK5 ZS? Mine smelt like the ford escorts/Mondoes my parents used to own from new in the '90's!

Cant believe the hate from enthusiasts but i suppose the site is heading that way atm.

Most haters are too young to appreciate how good these cars were with a little boost back in the day.

  Disastra Coupe
Love it.

I think people who don't appreciate them maybe weren't brought up in the right circumstance's? When i was younger my Dad owned many mk1 Escorts, Anglia's etc. Concourse, mag featured etc. We did all the shows and everything, so for me seeing an old Ford is like going back to my child hood. I remember my Uncle (probably about my age now, then) buying his S1 RS Turbo and as a kid i was so excited to go out in it every time.

Very nearly bought an S2 myself few year back. If it wasn't for a faulty insurance quote i'd probably still have it now! Enjoy :)
