My views after a few weeks on the 17’s!

Ok guys the 17s have been on a few weeks now, and here are my conclusions!
Im runnin Superleggaras, with A539 205s. Grip in the wet is sh*t, but in the dry is awesome!
Acceleration hasnt been affected, (well not noticably anyway) i can still keep up with all the cars i did before.
So i was quite happy, until... i took my motorway trip down to me mums, high speed long, empty roads, top end has slowed up considerably, she really slows down at 120-125, and slugs up to 130-135, whereas before she use to slow this much at 130-135! is this norm?!?!?!

Never tried the top end when I had mine! But there will be more drag from the tyres since theyre wider but could be a whole host of things though!

Have you really tested the acceleration?? I couldnt tell I was any slower until I actually tried and it really did show!! I must admit the 195s are a lots better, the steering is back to normal, it was heavier with the 205s and it doesnt sit as high as such lowering CofG and IMO gives better handling, hardly any difference to original though it is a firmer ride! I also thought the Toyos were very noisey but you shouldnt have that problem :D

Iv just put 15s back on mine from 17s and it pulls up to 100 like it neva has. Im well happy with the performance, just a shame they dont look quite as nice!

What size tyres are you running? 205/40s?

The std 195/45x16s are 582mm diameter. 205/40x17s are 597mm i.e. a much larger rolling diameter.

Your best bet on 17s would be 225/35x17s with a 589mm diameter.

The best bet would be 215/35R17 which are 582mm in diameter but I made do with 195/40R17 which are 588mm in diameter.

because of the bigger rolling radius you are actually going faster than the speedo says so when it now says 120-125 you could be doing 130-135 so slowing down the same as before in reality

Guys,

I am still convinced that my CUP is slower, like a tw*t, I put 205/40/17 and miscalculated. This weekend I am doing testing on the 17"s then the 16"s for 0 - 60, 0 - 100, 30 - 70 and 80 - 100 and I will post results.

Now the % difference is only 2% and that should be within the tolerance not to make any difference but I am convinced it does. If so, then I am getting 35 profile tyres!!!

One thing also is that I have a GPS system so I get a TRUE speedo readout and the speedo on the CUP with 17"s is absolutely on the money!!!!!!! My Impreza reads 95mph and the GPS reads 87!!!!!!!

HMMMM THAT COULD BE INTERESTING! anhone elsethink this could be a possibility? it sounds defo plausable!

Theorectically that is true! For one radius of the wheel you are going a greater distance hence why the speedo will read a slightly higher speed than you are actually doing. But there are so many other things that could affect this. With 205 tyres you are running a wider tyre which mean more contact with the road so more drag. Also with Turinis there will be more drag due to the amount of spokes they have....

There was an article in last weeks autocar where they tested one of there cars with multi-spoke alloys (as opposed to the standard 7 spoke) and they lost 9mph top end due to drag

So many factors but IMO very little different especially with the 195s

The rolling circumference of the larger tyre is 2.6% larger than the standard tyre. So at 100mph you are actually doing 102.6 assuming the speedo was spot-on to start with.

I must admit after switching to a new set of 17" and bus tyres I found my performace was affected considerably... or it could have been the loss of 90bhp as well ;)

Sorry could not resist, I am in a mischievous mood today:sleep:

P.S Does anybody else like the 17s on the Pug GTI 180?

Yeah I like them!

Havent you got those??

I have seen them on a lot of 306s and I think they look better than on the 206 GTI 180. They look too wide at the front on those!!

anyone with a 172 or cup near me so we can have a comparisson?

or when is this bluewater meet happenin?
