My VW T4

Here's my VW T4. I bought it last week after getting rid of my 200tEDC.

It's 16 years old, an ex AA van with 210k on the clock and full service history with lots of receipts. It's the 2.5tdi 102bhp version although it's been mapped and it's bloody quick!

Plans atm are to turn it into a camper, lower it and tidy the outside up as there's a few marks on it aswell as change the wheels. Hoping I'll own this for many years!

I bumped into a guy who owned it around 10 years ago and he had turned it into a camper at that time, sadly someone has stripped it since then so the back just has 2 seats and some laminate flooring lol. He also put some Recaro buckets from a ford in there which need reupholstering now. So far I love it more than my clio and don't regret the change.

Sorry for the crap pics.

Around the 5k mark. I'd been to look at loads and this turned out to be the best. I'll get a lot of usage out of it.... or the engine will blow lol!

I never knew they held such a premium until I started looking around. It seems you can chuck whatever price tag you want on them.

TBH I despise the things. Round here, they tend to be driven by utter mongs. Although since you seem able to string a sentence together, perhaps it's a local issue!

You're happy with it, that's the main thing - enjoy!

Im sure your happy with it and i am clueless when it comes to this sort of thing but WTF is going on with the prices of these ?

  Whichever has fuel
£5k for a 16 year old van with 210k on the clock?
My mate bought a battered old pea green T4 builders van for £1500. He painted it white (didn't bother to do the door shuts or engine bay!) and fitted some £500 eBay alloys and fitted some seats out of an old Saab, Sold it for £5,800 to some chump.

I just don't get it. I can understand if it was a minter with a huge sound system or on Air ride etc but people pay thousands for a standard van with some alloys on it.

A Renault Trafic/vain vivaro is a better van, newer, will never rust, faster, better on fuel, more comfy... and you can get a really really nice one for £2,500.

Have you still got the van ? If so how’s it going , do you use it much day to day and have you used it to go camping etc ?
I keep looking at them but prices are all over the show and not sure if it’s worth having as a low mileage daily
Cheers

Still got it. I'm in the middle of converting it, not long had a rock n roll bed fitted so hoping to get away in it in the next few months.

Engine wise it's spot on. I needed quite a bit of welding doing on it in the end so that cost some! I'm lucky that atm I either use my motorbike or my Mrs car for work but last summer I used it for work most days. I'll probably start using it again soon. They're pretty easy to work on and I've found a local specialist down the road whose cheap as chips. So far I've had to fit a new heater control arm (30 quid) ball joint (90 quid I think it was) and that's it.

If I don't use it much this summer it'll be going. If you need any advice give me a shout as I've learnt loads about them lol

Great stuff, I am not sure whether to look at T4 or T5’s it’s very difficult to price them as they appear similar but prices are pretty much what you can get away with. Looking at £10k for T5 with 100k plus miles.
Do they need a lot of maintenance and does short runs not do them any good

I only looked at one t5 but decided the t4 was for me. I think whichever one you go for there is the potential for them to turn expensive quickly! Look out for rust - sliding door step, arches, drivers and passenger step, check the sliding door runner aswell as that can rot aswell. You can get a new sliding door step and runner for around 350 quid that can be welded in.

Regarding short runs, I've got the 2.5tdi 102bhp version that's been remapped and it bloody drinks diesel for fun but it's bloody pokey and will pull passed 80mph no problem.

Maintenance - everyone I looked at had one or more oil leaks. Mines got a few but doesn't seem to lose much oil at all. Other than that I just put diesel in and go. I'll service it every year. I need to change disks/pads this year.

They're money pits because you'll always spot something you need. I need new seats because it's got tatty fiesta rs turbo seats at the moment but that's a want more than a necessity. I've got a mate with a converted t5 and he loves his.

They are good fun, but with even a half-assed camper conversion you can charge big money for them.
My mate got himself a 2.5 130bhp T5 to convert to a camper, think it was 6 or 7 grand?

We mapped it to 170bhp-ish last year and naturally it's just s**t it's turbo, now he's looking for a bigger turbo, intercooler etc.
Not even started the conversion 🙈

Must be VW fanboy in full effect with prices like those being mentioned. As others have said, I simply can't comprehend the fascination with these things, but each to their own I guess. £5k is quite a few hotel stays 😂

Our kid loves them, buys them, modify them and sells them and MAKES money every time.

For a lot of people it’s not about going fast, coilovers, and handling. It’s about having a cool vehicle to attend the countless vw shows that occur over here.

Our next vehicle after the galaxy packs in is going to be a t5 of some description, trying to hold off for another couple of years though, get our money’s worth out of the galaxy 1st, any plans for it?

Nice set of wheels and lower it. Will look at some sort of bed for it and a split charge system and may leave it at that. It's too easy to get drawn into spending thousands!

Sounds good, yeah I can see how there’s a never ending list of stuff you could do to them.

The amount you can do to these is crazy. I've seen one with an RS4 engine in and an interior to die for.

Can you still flash the ECU through the ODB port on these at home??

I think Bluefin do a kit that'll take the 102 to around 160bhp ish. Only thing is, the 102 has a 5spd box that can't handle the same torque as the 140bhp 6 speed unit.
